About the role

Title: Indirect Tax Manager

Report to: Tax Director

Department: Tax

Location: Morristown, NJ

This role will be on a hybrid working schedule. 3 days in office 2 days from home.

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Indirect Tax Manager to join our Tax Department. The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee all aspects of indirect taxes, with a specific focus on sales and use tax. The Indirect Tax Manager will ensure compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations, minimize tax liabilities, and support the overall tax strategy of the organization. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of indirect tax principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Proficiency with Vertex tax engine and experience with PeopleSoft and NetSuite ERP systems is preferred. The Indirect Tax Manager will also be responsible for managing consultants and other 3rd party outsourcing resources.

Responsibilities

Indirect Tax Compliance and Reporting:

  • Oversee the preparation and filing of accurate and timely sales and use tax returns and property tax renditions by 3rd party outsourced compliance provider, ensuring compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.

  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations related to indirect taxes and update internal processes and procedures accordingly.

  • Collaborate with the Tax Director and IT to improve the payment voucher process and automate the cash journals in the various ERP systems.

Tax Planning and Strategy:

  • Collaborate with the Tax Director to develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize indirect tax positions.

  • Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders on indirect tax matters, including the impact of new business initiatives and transactions.

  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of tax-efficient processes and systems to streamline indirect tax compliance and reporting.

Research and Analysis:

  • Conduct thorough research and analysis of complex indirect tax issues, including sales and use tax laws, regulations, and rulings.

  • Interpret tax laws and regulations to determine the tax implications of business transactions and advise internal stakeholders accordingly.

  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices related to indirect taxes, and provide recommendations for process improvements and risk mitigation.

Audit Support and Dispute Resolution:

  • Manage indirect tax audits, including gathering and organizing relevant documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and resolving any identified issues.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve tax disputes and negotiate favorable outcomes.

  • Maintain accurate and organized records of all tax-related documentation, including audit files and supporting documentation.

Vertex Tax Engine and PeopleSoft ERP:

  • Utilize and maintain proficiency in the Vertex tax engine to ensure accurate and efficient indirect tax calculations and reporting.

  • Collaborate with IT, Accounting and Finance teams to integrate and maintain Vertex tax engine with PeopleSoft, Netsuite ERPs and related modules (e.g., procure-to-pay), ensuring seamless data flow and accurate tax determination.

  • Collaborate in the 3rd party led implementation and design of Vertex.

  • Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders on the effective use of Vertex tax engine for indirect tax compliance and reporting.

Outsourcing Management:

  • Manage relationships with outsourcing consultants and resources, ensuring timely and accurate completion of indirect tax compliance and reporting tasks.

  • Provide guidance and support to outsourcing consultants, reviewing their work for accuracy and compliance with tax laws and regulations.

  • Collaborate with outsourcing consultants to identify process improvements and implement best practices for indirect tax compliance and reporting.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Finance, Legal, IT and Operations, to ensure accurate and timely reporting of indirect taxes.

  • Provide training and guidance to internal stakeholders on indirect tax matters, ensuring awareness and compliance throughout the organization.

  • Act as a subject matter expert on indirect tax matters, providing guidance and support to other team members as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Master's degree or professional tax certification (e.g., CPA) is preferred.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in indirect tax compliance, with a specific focus on sales and use tax and Indirect taxes.

  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations related to indirect taxes.

  • Proficiency in using Vertex tax engine for indirect tax calculations and reporting.

  • Experience with PeopleSoft and Netsuite ERP systems preferred, particularly in integrating with tax engines and ensuring accurate tax determination.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in managing outsourcing consultants and resources is preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and tax software.
