Bellingham Technical College IMPACT! Youth Re-engagement Program is seeking an adjunct instructor to plan and teach GED classes, which include high school Reading Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science content. The position is scheduled to start for the 2024-2025 academic year, starting in Fall quarter 2024 (September 9th

  • December 12th). Adjunct positions are part-time and quarterly. Employment is contingent upon adequate enrollment.

The class load will be from 2 classes each academic quarter. (Classes are during the day, between 9:00am

  • 3:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The morning class is scheduled from 9:00 am-11:30 and the afternoon class 1:00 pm-3:00 pm.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach courses during the times and dates specified by the academic schedule in collaboration with team teacher;

  • Support students in a highly independent learning environment in learning GED learning material;

  • Assist students in creating individual study plans based on individual need;

  • Plan, supervise, and evaluate students' progress;

  • Maintain related student records, classroom attendance, evaluations, and progress reports;

  • Consult with program staff on issues relevant to student success and retention;

  • Follow program procedures and deal consistently and fairly with all students;

  • Ability and willingness to adapt to changing teaching schedules and as required by program;

  • Effectively use computer applications where appropriate, including learning management systems and GED.com;

  • Participate in departmental andcampus wide meetings;

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to Bellingham Technical College's Mission;

  • Other related duties as assigned and required.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution;

  • Experience with high school students;

  • Ability to work well with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences;

  • Technology experience for instruction.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution;

  • Two years of teaching experience;

  • Washington State Secondary Teaching Certification.

Supplemental Information

Salary & Benefits:

Adjunct salaries will be determined according to the current negotiated salary schedules. Effective July 1, 2024, per course compensation ranges from $2,221.89 for a 33-hour course to $5,184.41 for a 77-hour course; hours for GED courses can vary, but are most often 55 hours ($3,703.15). Fall quarter Tuesday/Thursday classes contain 63 instructional hours each ($4,241.79). Rate of pay includes payment for extra duties required for the teaching, prep-time, meetings, office hours, and professional functions associated with this assignment.

Benefits: The following benefits are in accordance with the Bellingham Education Association (BEA) and subject to change with each negotiated contact. Current BEA contract expires June 30, 2025. Benefits include paid sick leave. Sick leave is accrued based on their contracted FTEF multiplied by 7.5 hour for each month in active teaching status. In addition, if eligible, a 5% per hour more above the teaching rate doctoral stipend if teaching a five credit or more course (not paid on contract training, community or continuing ed courses); In addition, a 5% Longevity premium rate after teaching 1375 hours at BTC. Other benefits include Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a free counseling & referral program; potential flexible and/or remote schedules. No additional benefits.

Condition of Employment: Background Check: Prior to final hire, a pre-employment background, including criminal history and signed declaration statement as it pertains to sexual misconduct per Washington State Law (RCW 28B.112.080) will be conducted. Employment is contingent on passing the background check and signed declaration per RCW 28b.112.080 satisfactory to the college. Information from the background check and declaration will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. This position has access to children under the age of 18.
