The Immigration Legal Services (ILS) program provides immigration legal services and fingerprinting services to immigrants and refugees in the Rocky Mountain region. The primary focus of the Immigration Specialist position is to provide immigration legal consultations and direct representation on cases derived from consultations, referrals, or as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under supervision of an immigration attorney consults with clients throughout the Rocky Mountain region one-on-one and in a workshop setting to determine legal options and eligibility for various forms of immigration benefits including, but not limited to, adjustment of status, naturalization, employment authorization, and family reunification.

  • Travel may be required up to 35 percent of the time to LFSRM sub offices throughout the State and other service areas.

  • Handles ongoing representation of cases derived from consultations in compliance with grant requirements and under the direction of the Legal Services Director or Managing Attorney.

  • Prepares applications and supporting documentation to be filed with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

  • Maintains accurate and complete case files.

  • Maintains client correspondence, both in written and oral communication.

  • Advises, prepares, counsels, and represents clients in cases before USCIS for naturalization interviews, and in limited cases, for adjustment of status interviews.

  • Researches complex questions regarding U.S Immigration laws using Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).

  • Organizes and participates in regional case specific workshops, including volunteer recruitment and training.

  • Conducts outreach to refugee, asylee, and other immigrant populations about the ILS program at LFSRM.

  • Ensures timely data and report compilation, analysis and response for internal and external uses.

  • Serves as the liaison with community partners on community immigration legal services efforts and participates in network-wide events and initiatives.

  • Conducts various administrative tasks.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in Spanish, Swahili, Dari/Pashto, Arabic, or other client language highly desired.

  • Excellent legal writing and oral communication skills in English.

  • Well-organized with the proven ability to prioritize duties and manage time effectively.

  • Experience researching legal issues using CFR, INA, Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) case law, Circuit Court of Appeals decisions, Agency memorandum, etc.

  • Ability to work with foreign nationals and possess cross-cultural sensitivity.

  • Ideal candidate will have demonstrated commitment to working in public interest in immigration or related areas.

  • Experience as a partially Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representative preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other immigration software.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license; have a reliable and consistently available vehicle; and be able to regularly travel throughout the agency's service area by way of interstate highways and primary and secondary roads within the state and region.

  • Must carry automobile liability insurance at the level of $100,000/300,000/100.000.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associates degree (A.A.) or paralegal certificate, or at least two years of relevant work experience. Combination of work experience and training received accepted.

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree

  • Immigration legal experience

  • 2+ years relevant work experience in immigration or human services field, experience with immigration preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May train and supervise interns and/or volunteers.
