Commercial Insurance Risk Control Consultant - Independent Contractor


EXL Risk Control is a leading provider of risk assessments and loss control surveys to commercial lines insurance carriers. We are seeking candidates who possess 10+ years of experience with a major insurance carrier and/or national broker in commercial Property & Casualty Risk Control, excellent communication skills, computer proficiency, and a commitment to meeting client quality and timeliness standards. Those with these skills as well as knowledge or experience in commercial insurance, inspections, or fire and safety assessments are encouraged to apply.

You will be responsible to schedule on-site surveys and provide risk evaluation and risk improvement reports to insurance industry clients. These reports contain information necessary to underwrite a commercial insurance policy, and may include recommendations to control and/or correct potential loss producing conditions associated with that policy. You will be expected to manage assignments you accept, successfully secure customer appointments within a local territory and complete work assignments on time.

You may work on special projects or conduct more challenging risk evaluation surveys or risk improvement service requests that utilize your education, professional certifications and overall risk control skills level. Insured businesses range from Middle Market to Large Multi-location commercial size.

Consultants will work from their home or office, and travel to local commercial business operations (i.e.) retail businesses, restaurants, hotels, apartment buildings and complexes, construction operations and jobsites, various types of manufacturers, churches, schools, etc. You will assess the risk for various commercial insurance lines of business that can include Property, General Liability, Workers Compensation, Auto/Fleet, Products Liability, Inland Marine and Builders Risk.

Tools or Items You Must Provide:

  • Windows-based PC with an image/document scanner

  • Digital camera

  • High speed internet access

  • Measuring device such as: laser, 100 ft. tape, or measuring wheel

  • Reliable vehicle

  • Auto and General Liability Insurance

Preferred Experience

  • 10+ years of Risk Control Consulting

  • Experience working with major carrier or national brokerage preferred

  • BS Degree in Engineering, Safety and/or the physical sciences is preferred

  • CSP or ARM designations preferred but not required

  • Commercial Lines Property/Casualty Loss Control

  • Commercial Lines Property/Casualty Underwriting

  • Commercial Lines Property/Casualty Claims Adjuster

  • Commercial insurance inspections

  • Fire and Life Safety investigations/inspections

Must pass a background check. No Licensed Insurance Agents/Producers.

Job Summary: Markel Corporation, a Fortune 500 Insurance Holding Company, is seeking an Insurance Underwriter for our Henderson, NV office to be responsible for the review, evaluation, and judgment of risk of prospective application submissions for Workers Compensation Insurance and Business Owners Insurance within a state(s) specific Independent Agency group. The Underwriter collaborates with Sales and Claims to ensure profitability of their assigned shared state territory. The Underwriter also serves as a member of the regional production team and is responsible for maintaining Insurance Agency relationships and meeting new business productivity, renewal, retention and pricing goals. The Insurance Underwriter is responsible for the evaluation of risk associated with new and renewal accounts based on agency performance, state performance, and pricing adequacy. The Underwriter works within established authority levels based on experienced. Specific duties include the following: * Profitably manages assigned territory. * Reviews referrals and applications for coverage requiring underwriting acceptance of risks using professional judgment in accordance with company risk appetite and company guidelines. * Determines appropriate financial alternatives based on exposures, controls, loss trends, loss prevention services, economic conditions and financial acceptability. * Achieves a balanced, profitable and quality book of business while protecting company assets. * Keeps current on assigned states and territory regulations and industry intelligence. * Preserves profitability by managing risk performance through co-ordination with Loss Control, Premium Audit, Claims and Sales through monitoring of loss experience and taking appropriate action to reduce or eliminate future claims. * Participates in the monitoring of Agents and evaluates results and relationships. * Makes recommendations for growth strategies capitalizing on new identified opportunities. * Builds strong relationships with Agents and prospective and current insureds. * Meet new business production, renewal retention and pricing goals. * Travel to state territories for Agency exposure and Convention attendance. Job Requirements * Bachelor's degree required, business related preferred. * Minimum 2 years business related experience or prior industry experience in risk management or insurance underwriting. * Prefer experience in small business commercial insurance - Workers' Compensation and Business Owner Policy products. * Strong quantitative analytical skills desired. * Competitive, transaction-oriented professional preferred. * Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with fluency in Microsoft Excel application. * Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. * Demonstrated experience developing successful business relationships. * Business Specific Criteria (Preferred Skills): * Experience in the Workers' Compensation industry and products. * Experience working with NCCI rules and regulations. * Experience working effectively with Agents/Brokers and insured clients. * Experience working in coordination with Loss Control, Premium Audit, Claim, Sales and Marketing to obtain profitability and growth goals. * Experience developing and delivering presentations. * Experience Marketing or Underwriting Business Owner Policy products are a plus.
