About this Position / Responsibilities

A hands on Project Lead for the support of Mainframe hardware and operating systems with a focus on the IBM z/OS.

  • Evaluates, plans, installs and maintains the z/OS and z/VM Operating systems and related software products.

  • Develops operational standards; may coordinate the conversion of existing sytems to enable exploitation or coexistence with new computer hardware and/or software.

  • Plans, coordiates, and monitors project activities.

  • Maintains and analyzes system performance, identifies trends and potential problems, and recommends solutionsand alterations based on analyses.

  • Provide training for system products and procedures.

  • Troubleshoots problems.

  • Coordinates IT project management, engineering, maintenance, QA and risk management.

  • Plans, coordinates and monitors project activities.

  • Develops technical applications to support users.

  • Develops, implements, maintains and enforces documented standards and procedures for the design, development, installation, modification, and documentation of assigned systems.

  • Provides training for system products and procedures.

  • Performs application upgrades.

  • Performs, monitoring, maintenance, or reporting on real-time graphics and logic applications.

  • Troubleshoots problems.

  • Ensures project life-cycle is in compliance with District standards and procedures.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or related field or equivalent experience required.
  • 8-10 years' Mainframe operating systems programming required.
  • 8-10 years' experience with z/OS structures and flow, key parameters and security required.
  • 8-10 years' experience installing, using SMP/e customizing, tuning, and performing capacity planing for mainframe z/OS and assocaiated products.
  • 8-10 years' leading projects, ensuring they are in compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • 8-10 years' experience diagnosing and resolving errors in major operating systems and subsystems components (e.g., z/OS, VTAM, TCP/IP, JES2, z/VM, and z/Linux).
  • 8-10 years' experience with Mainframe Storage Management, familiarity with SMS, TMS (CA1), Hitachi Disk subsystems.
  • 8-10 years' installing, customizing, tuning, and performing capacity planning for Mainframe z/VM and/or z/Linux and associated products.
  • 8-10 years' Mainframe operating systems, programming experience, familiar with z/VM and/or z/Linux structure, flow, key parms and security.

The Sr. System Administrator (MQ) is responsible for MQ support, implementation, standards & governance, integration & deployment, monitoring, root cause analysis and performance tuning of medium-scale MQ deployments. Technical Skills: * Be responsible for enterprise wide WebSphere MQ messaging infrastructure across distributed platforms including; UNIX (AIX and Linux), WINDOWS. * Utilize WebSphere MQ Administration (V8.x & above) on distributed platforms (AIX, Linux, and Windows) * Troubleshoot platform on AIX, Linux and Windows systems, build and run scripts. * Administer MQ using MQE and command line using MQSC commands * Administer and manage MQ Publish/Subscribe * Perform software installations and patches to WebSphere MQ servers * Design and build Distributed Queue Management * Administer and manage MQ Clusters * Setup security for WebSphere MQ queues & other objects for data access and for administration using role-based security * Be able to work with MQ monitoring tools like Tivoli, QPasa, open source monitoring like Grafana and Prometheus. * Work with application development teams providing support of middleware components. * Define and maintain middleware standards and governance including MQ and API administration and utilization. * Perform backup & recovery, clustering, security, patch management, enterprise monitoring & performance tuning. * Perform strategic analysis and design of MQ infrastructure and make recommendations on improvements and/or new systems required to meet business needs and future capacity. * Serve as technical resource to business analysts, solutions development and other groups responsible for application development standards, system design and integration. * Maintain professional knowledge of WebSphere MQ hosted on AIX, Linux, and Windows systems as required for the administration and support of a large scale distributed environment * Prepare and maintain professional documentation of server(s) / application(s) / network configuration(s) as they relate to middleware components and infrastructure. * Engineer solutions, related to messaging that support and enhance business operations with guidance from Enterprise Architect Team and Technical Management. * Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers supporting them to achieve excellence in their fields of interest and responsibility.
