ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The mission of the Institute of Applied Engineering is to provide agile, best value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness and safety of its customers. The Institute's customers include the Department of Defense, other federal, state and local agencies, and industry. In support of its mission, the Institute performs applied research in alignment with the following core competencies: Autonomous Systems; Human Performance Enhancement; Data Analytics; Cyber and Electromagnetic Domain Security; and Transportation and Energy infrastructure. As a DSO of USF, the Institute is a separately incorporated Florida 501(c)(3) authorized to use USF property, facilities, and personal services for the benefit of USF's research, development, and education mission. As such, the Institute's operations and research staff collaborate with USF faculty and students to develop and deliver these engineering solutions in support of its customers' requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Engineer II collaborates with other engineers, faculty and colleagues on development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to research and technology development. This position directly participates in research project design and analysis and new business development. This position may also lead a team including full-time staff, undergraduate, and graduate students through assigned project tasks while providing guidance and mentorship to the team and providing progress and status reports to project leadership. The Engineer II supports administrative tasks related to managing project performance and deliverables.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborates with other engineers, faculty and colleagues on conceptual development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to research and technology development. Engineer II collects and analyzes data on research projects related to task orders and other assignments. These duties require critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Assists senior engineers in leading a team of full-time staff, undergraduate and graduate students through assigned project tasks by providing guidance, mentorship, and resources to promote productive work. Serves as a leader to student workers and provides functional supervision to other engineers as needed. This task may require development of training manual or equipment procedures.

Supports administrative tasks required for performance of research and technology development tasks, including management of contract deliverables, procurement of research materials and equipment, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Interfaces with stakeholders external to USF under guidance of project leadership, including reporting on projects and deliverables and supporting customer activities. Provide analysis of research findings. Collaborates on the interpretation and publication of results and relays information to customer as directed.

Acts as an advisor to stakeholders internal to USF, primarily other IAE staff and personnel, to help enact the IAE strategic plan and make optimal operational decisions related to delivering on projects and contracts. May be called on to draft portions of grant and contract proposals related to work. This may also include budget proposals.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physical or Biological Sciences and 3 years of engineering or scientific experience; or a Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences and 1 year of engineering or scientific experience.

PREFERRED:

A Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences, and one year of engineering or technical engineering experience. Work experience may be substituted for the Master's degree but may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree.
