Position Summary:

The IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) Liaison supports a culture of research excellence within the Office of Research Integrity. This position coordinates the university's Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) program to fulfill its commitment to ethical research practices and laboratory animal welfare. The IACUC Liaison will focus on providing personalized support to researchers navigating the IACUC process, fostering positive relationships, and promoting a culture of compliance and collaboration.

Workplace Requirements:

This position offers a flexible work schedule, with a minimum of 2 days in the office per week and occasional emergency response. Per Rice policy 440 work arrangements may be subject to change.

Proposed Hiring Range:

$63,000-$80,000, contingent upon qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

  • 2 years of experience in a research regulatory compliance role

  • Commitment to upholding ethical principles and promoting the welfare of research animals while advancing research objectives

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

  • Experience developing and delivering training in laboratory best practices

  • Exceptional professionalism, tact, and ability to resolve conflict

  • Technical report writing for internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities

Preferences:

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MS, DVM, PhD) in animal science or any STEM field

  • Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA), Credentialed Veterinary Technician (RVT, CVT, LVT) or Certified AALAS Technician (ALAT, LAT, LATG)

  • Working knowledge of regulations, policies, and nationally accepted standards regarding the care and use of animals in research, testing, and instruction (e.g., USDA Animal Welfare Act, PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, AAALAC accreditation standards)

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures all animal research activities are being conducted in accordance with ethical principles, institutional policies, accreditation standards, and state and federal regulations

  • Conducts all PAM activities, including scheduling, coordinating, documentation, reporting, and confirming the completion of corrective actions

  • In coordination with the Attending Veterinarian, recommends and implements best practices, including animal procedures, record-keeping requirements, and proper aseptic techniques for survival surgeries

  • Investigates, reports, and resolves animal welfare-related and compliance concerns, including those identified during semi-annual inspections

  • Develops and implements monitoring processes and improvement action plans

  • Develops forms and tools to enhance documentation of research activities and animal health monitoring to assure compliance with applicable USDA and PHS regulations, policies and guidelines

  • Develops and maintains program metrics to monitor compliance trends and prepares reports on trends, risk areas, and educational needs

  • Develops and implements PAM education programs in coordination with the IACUC

  • Collaborates in the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidelines, policies, and procedures

  • Develops work priorities based on institutional needs and regulatory areas

  • Performs other duties as assigned
