About Our Job

Denver Public Safety Youth Programs (DPSYP) is looking for someone to join our Helping Youth Pursue Excellence (HYPE) team. The HYPE program provides vocational and educational support to justice-involved youth with referrals coming from probation, pre-trial release, and diversion programs as well as Denver Truancy Court. HYPE has four program tracks that youth can be referred to including:

  • Vocational track:10-week program that focuses on enhancing the soft skills and work skills to expand career pathways for the youth. The vocational track runs out of The Urban Farm located in northeast Denver which is a non-profit farm that promotes youth and community education. This is a paid work experience, and the program runs 4-5 cohorts per year serving between 6-10 youth per co-hort.

  • Educational track: The program serves youth who are not engaged in school or have dropped out of school.

    Working with staff from Denver Public Schools and Colorado Youth for a Change, this track focuses on developing school-readiness skills and providing individualized support including tutoring and ongoing case management to increase likelihood of a successful transition back to school. This program follows the public-school calendar and ends in May. Through a partnership with the Community College of Denver (CCD), youth can receive support earning a GED and have access to post-secondary opportunities available at CCD.

  • Summer Employment Track: In partnership with Denver Public Schools, HYPE offers a summer employment opportunity that allows youth a chance to complete an 120-hour paid experience that is in person programming. This track is for youth who are looking to enter the workforce but are still attending school.

  • Educational Group Track: Groups that are offered through HYPE are based on the needs of the referring agencies. Currently HYPE facilitates a Victim Empathy group that includes past victims as guest speakers to enhance empathy in the youth.

This position will work as part of a three-person team to facilitate HYPE programming in collaboration with staff from partner agencies. HYPE Program Specialists are required to facilitate group lessons and provide one-on-one instruction to youth as necessary. HYPE staff are tasked with monitoring, supporting, and encouraging the youths' progress toward completing their individual plan goals.

Each program track has a unique operating schedule; however, all program tracks operate Monday thru Friday between the hours of 9am - 7pm. The educational, summer employment, and educational group tracks are all run out the Denver Juvenile Services Center (DJSC) located at 303 W. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80204. The vocational track operates at The Urban Farm (TUF) located at 10200 Smith Road. Denver, CO 80239 (Mon-Thurs 8:30am-3:30pm & occasional Saturday)

Guidelines, Difficulty and Decision-Making Level:

Guidelines are generally numerous, well established and directly applicable to the work assignment. Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions.

Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.

Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.

Level of Supervision Received and Quality Review:

Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Interpersonal Communications and Purpose:

Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

This position will work with other HYPE staff and program partners to facilitate programming as assigned. Duties include:

  • Co-facilitate HYPE program tracks based on assignment including providing one-on-one and/or group support.

  • Develop individual program plans for each youth in collaboration with the youth and referring officers to identify individual goals/milestones for the youth while in the program.

  • Assess youths' progress towards completing their individual program goals. Staff will meet with clients, family members/guardians, school staff, and/or other services providers as needed to discuss progress, problems, and solutions.

  • Complete case notes detailing individual participant progress towards completing program goals and finish required data entry to track youth participation and progress towards completing goals.

  • Assist participants with completing community-based projects by providing only necessary support to assist youth with completing tasks.

  • Transport youth to and from HYPE program activities as required. Use of personal vehicle is not required.

About You

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Criminal Justice, or a related field.

  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience in performing case management including completing comprehensive needs assessments and developing and implementing case plans. Or one (1) year of experience in case work and counseling in areas such as Diversion, Probation, alcohol and drug abuse, community based treatment case management, or a closely related area.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of experience in performing case management including completing comprehensive needs assessments and developing and implementing case plans. Or one (1) year of experience in case work and counseling in areas such as Diversion, Probation, alcohol and drug abuse, community based treatment case management, or a closely related area.

  • Licensure & Certification: By position, requires eligibility to possess a Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC) certificate or an Alcohol and Drug Evaluation Specialist (ADES) Certification from the State of Colorado at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
