The Hygiene Specialist is a member of the Hygiene Team that provides bathroom, shower, and laundry facilities to hundreds of area homeless individuals per month. The attendant contributes to the maintenance of a safe and welcoming environment in the Hygiene facilities. This is a unionized position, represented by Local 8 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU).

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Located in our Pioneer Square headquarters, the Hygiene Center offers people experiencing homelessness a place to use the restroom, take a hot shower and do a load of laundry. It's open on a drop-in basis during regular business hours.

Client Services

Greet clients in a kind and respectful manner when they arrive to use the bathroom/shower and laundry facilities.

Distribute supplies (towels, shampoo, soap, etc.) and monitor clients to ensure they have the supplies needed for personal hygiene.

\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t

Wash, dry and fold laundry along with towels for guests' showers up to 50 loads per day.

\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t

Ensure safety and security of clients and staff; enforcing program policies and agency rules.

\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t

Ensure the Hygiene Center is clean and sanitized, exceeding Health Department standards always.

Mediate conflicts and model appropriate problem solving.

Provide de-escalation and crisis intervention to clients of all programs in common areas.

Provide information and informal referral services to guests for both Compass and outside agency resources regarding housing, employment, food, and clothing.

Ensure appropriate program statistics are recorded and tracked in an accurately and timely manner.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or GED is strongly desired, associate degree preferred in social work or related field, or relevant work experience, certificate and/or equivalent continuing professional development or education.

A minimum of 1-year experience working or volunteering in homeless services organization, strongly preferred.

\t\t\t\t

A minimum of 1-year experience working in a customer service environment or high-volume public contact position, required.

\t\t\t\t

Demonstrated familiarity with issues of homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, sexual assault, and/or domestic violence, required.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is normal.

Compass programs are housed within a human services environment in the Greater Seattle area. Our diverse tenant community includes many single, formerly homeless adults who lack any family support system. Compounding the constraints of poverty, our client community includes the physically and mentally disabled, persons living with AIDS, those who struggle with chemical dependencies, veterans, and vulnerable, elderly adults.

Working at Compass will mean that you will be in close proximity to the people we serve. This position is not eligible for remote work, it requires onsite work only.

\t\t\tCompass facilities are monitored with camera surveillance equipment for safety and security purposes. The cameras will generally be utilized only in public areas where there is no reasonable expectations of privacy. However, please be aware that in our housing facilities, some residents may choose to utilize their own private surveillance equipment within their units.
