National Grid is seeking an HVDC Controls and Protection Engineer in our Sandy Pond Ayer, MA location.
The HVDC Engineer you will be responsible to ensure the reliable operation of the 2000MW multi-terminal HVDC interconnection. Maintain and provide engineering support for the HVDC Network Controls and Protections equipment. Assist HVDC Operations and Maintenance with Control & Protection equipment related issues.
Troubleshoot, analyze, and repair issues with HVDC control and protection equipment.
Oversee and document hardware / software updates and modifications utilizing specialized Engineering Change Order procedures. (ROX & ROSX methods).
Perform control and protection hardware and software modifications to ensure the safe and proper operation of the DC Network. Work closely with our Hydro Quebec counterparts on studies and projects.
Create, update and maintain control and protection drawings using Microstation CAD system.
Work closely with Operations, Maintenance personnel and vendors to solve problems and make improvements.
Share on-call responsibilities as required within the Controls & Protections group to effectively respond to system failures and emergencies.
Participate with / support other National Grid HVDC studies and commissioning projects
Able to read schematics, blueprints, one-lines. Recommend / oversee changes to documentation.
Understand networking infrastructure and protocols including Routers, Switches, and Hubs, TCP/IP, Firewalls and telecom equipment.
Represent the company in meetings and conferences, present material as needed
Familiar with power system components, power system modeling and protection relays.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Good personal organization and attention to detail.
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, MSEE preferred, from an accredited Engineering Program
Experience in high voltage systems, HVDC experience a plus.
Knowledge and experience in control and protections systems, SCADA, Telecom, Cyber Security a plus.
Must be on or qualify within 6 months to be On National Grid Clearance on Control list
Experience in harmonic analysis, power system stability and control a major plus.
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Relay protection and testing experience a plus
Experience with PSS/E or Matlab a plus
Knowledge or willing to learn various programming languages PLM, C++, UNIX and HiDraw.
Working knowledge of Microstation CAD system or ability to be trained.
Project management experience a plus
Must be able to respond to off-hour emergencies and Control and Protections related issues and failures
Must be able to work outside and from heights as needed
