The Opportunity:

Join our dynamic team as an HVAC Specialist I. This position provides essential support for the operational maintenance and sanitation of campus buildings, aiming to ensure a safe, functional, clean, efficient, and attractive living and learning environment. You will troubleshoot issues, provide service, and respond to requests from customers and staff. This role requires readiness to address emergencies or unforeseen situations. Assignments may rotate to meet departmental needs and encourage cross-training. Ensure all components adhere to national and state codes. Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to HVAC systems. The ideal candidate possesses basic skills in HVAC and refrigeration systems, including water source heat pumps, direct expansion, and electrical and plumbing systems. On-call responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform scheduled preventive (PM) and predictive maintenance (PDM) to identify and prevent potential failures.

  • Conduct PM repairs (PMR) for defects found during PM or PDM.

  • Carry out corrective repairs in response to user-reported issues to restore functionality.

  • Install, maintain, test, and calibrate refrigeration components connected to campus HVAC equipment.

  • Calibrate electric, electronic, and pneumatic controls to maintain design temperature and humidity.

  • Assist central shops, contractors, other zones and departments, or events on campus.

  • Engage in project work related to Facilities Improvement programs, Capital Improvement programs, or facility upgrades.

  • Complete work orders promptly, recording labor hours, action codes, shop stock, and trade notes.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in heating, ventilation and/or air conditioning; or a high school diploma and 2 years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HVAC Technician Certification and EPA Clean Air Section 608 Certification.

  • 1000 instruction hours or two years of on-the-job training as a refrigeration mechanic.

  • Experience or training as a refrigeration mechanic.

  • Ability to read blueprints and wiring schematics.

  • Proficiency in operating essential tools and equipment.

  • Proficiency in using standard office software applications for work order systems (e.g., Integrated Work Management System).

  • Ability to operate a vehicle as necessary.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Effective communication skills to work with customers and team members, operate electronic equipment (e.g., iPod Touch for AiM PM checkpoints), comprehend standard safety procedures, and utilize telecommunication devices.

  • Adaptability in assignments.

  • Demonstrated capabilities in interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, calculation, reading, evaluation, comprehension, and organizing.

  • Ability to use EH&S-approved chemicals daily for essential job functions.

Health Assessment Required:

UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.

Special Instructions to the Applicants:

This position is eligible for 5% Shift Differential Pay of the pay range minimum.

Position requires a valid Class E driver's license. This position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.

May be required to participate in respiratory, medical examination, and training in use of respirators.
