Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

An employee in this position services, installs, troubleshoots and repairs all aspects of the HVAC, refrigeration and food service equipment located on the Commonwealth University Bloomsburg Campus. Including but not limited to air and water- cooled chillers, package rooftop units, hot / chilled water pumps, fan coil units, variable air valves (VAV), control valves, air handlers and associated Building Automation System (BAS) Controls, Lab exhaust systems, compressed air systems, steam heat converters, walk in coolers and freezers, commercial ovens and related equipment.

This position is considered an essential personnel position.

Description of Duties

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve comfort issues in multi-zone HVAC systems throughout resident halls and academic buildings

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical or refrigeration issues associated with all HVAC systems and equipment located throughout Commonwealth University Bloomsburg Campus (Chillers, heating pumps, chilled water pumps, steam heat converters, air handlers, split system air conditioners, package rooftop units, fan coil units, VAV's)

  • Utilize BAS to optimize system efficiencies and energy usage based on building occupancy

  • Troubleshoot and repair or replace BAS controlled components (sensors, actuators, dampers, relays, etc.)

  • Troubleshoot and repair pneumatic controls

  • Troubleshoot complex HVAC systems using BAS (Siemens) by utilizing trend viewers and associated sequences (Lab exhaust systems, Cental Chiller plants and distribution systems)

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair commercial kitchen equipment (walk in freezers and coolers, ovens, ice machines, refrigerators, kettles, cold tables, grills etc.)

  • Install, replace HVAC/ refrigeration systems and components by utilizing schematics, wire diagrams and associated plans

  • Use best refrigeration practices and procedures to diagnose refrigerant issues in Direct Expansion commercial air conditioning equipment

  • Perform preventative maintenance on air and water-cooled chillers, cooling towers and pumps

  • Perform preventative maintenance on air handler system, package rooftop units, fan coil units, split system air conditioners etc.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on commercial kitchen equipment (walk in freezers and coolers, ovens, ice machines, kettles, cold tables, grills etc.)

  • Document time worked utilizing assigned work orders

  • Act as a lead for, and review the work of an HVAC Maintenance Mechanic

  • Participate in performance of other trades' tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements

  • Operate a motor vehicle

  • Perform related work as required

Decision Making

Troubleshoot, diagnose, plan and repair HVAC, refrigeration and food service equipment located throughout campus. Create parts list needed for repair or install. Follow up with repair and parts needed with your direct supervisor.

  • Assigns work to and inspects work of lower-class HVAC Refrigeration Maintenance Mechanic. Provides feedback as needed.

  • Directs any concerns to their direct supervisor.

Minimum Requirements Profile

Successful completion of the HVAC and Building Automation Technician trainee program;

OR

Three years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC and refrigeration systems, units, and equipment including one year working with commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration equipment and controls;

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year working with commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration equipment and controls

  • All employees must obtain EPA Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification from an approved provider within 6 months of employment.

  • Must possess an active motor vehicle license.

Preferred Qualifications Applicant Rating Criteria Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, and the use of refrigerant tables.

  • Knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration parts and components including piping, bearings, valves, fittings, pumps, and fans and their operation in the system.

  • Knowledge in the care and use of tools and equipment essential to the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems.

  • Knowledge of electrical aspects of mechanical equipment, components, and related electronic devices.

  • Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment failures using electrical schematics, tools, meters, and test instruments.

  • Ability to calculate airflow and pressure-temperature characteristics to locate and repair faulty equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical equipment sequence of operation

  • Ability to use trend views and troubleshoot using Building Automation System (BAS)

  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose HVAC components controlled and monitored by the BAS

  • Ability to read and interpret HVAC, architectural, plumbing, and electrical system blueprints, schematics, and other engineering drawings.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to work alone or with fellow coworkers

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
