The Facilities Management Department is seeking a HVAC ENGINEER to join their team. This position primarily performs duties related to the installation, repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at various Missoula County sites for the Facilities Maintenance Department. Also performs all of the technical building and grounds maintenance work of a Building Engineer.

Repairs and maintains chillers, cooling towers, heat pumps, HVAC and well water-cooling systems. Performs service repair and maintenance of heating equipment, ventilation equipment, boilers, pumps, and related equipment.

Repairs and replaces refrigeration compressors and system components; troubleshoots electrical components of large refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Brazes ACR copper fittings and uses a vacuum pump and recovery unit for making repairs. Repairs and replaces electronic digital control systems; programs and services building automation controls Adjusts settings or logic from a laptop or a desktop computer.

Observes county building structures, envelopes and systems; reports any maintenance issues or unsafe conditions to the supervisor. Monitors preventive maintenance schedules and computerized control systems, performs preventive maintenance on hydronic circuits, boilers, and building access control systems. Performs maintenance and fixture replacement on lighting systems.

Assists with maintenance and repairs at remote mountain transmitter sites in all weather conditions. Performs work to repair specialized building systems including: fire and security systems; tube transport system; inmate phone system; and video arraignment system.  Makes plumbing, electrical, and minor welding repairs.

Assists with fire extinguisher maintenance.   Monitors supply inventory, maintains computerized records, and notifies the supervisor when supplies or parts are needed; places orders for supplies. Picks up supplies or materials as required.

Adheres to tool control policy. Performs grounds maintenance including snow removal, de-icing; lawn maintenance and work on lawn sprinkler systems.

  • Requires high school graduation or GED.

  • Requires EPA 608 Type 2 Refrigeration certification. NATE Core certification desired.

  • Requires four years of HVAC installation, repair and maintenance experience.  

  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Montana Driver's License and pass a driving history and extensive criminal background check.

The work is performed at a wide variety of facilities county wide including but not limited to: County courthouse and other office buildings; county fairgrounds; mountain transmitter sites; etc.

 The work requires considerable physical activity, occasionally in adverse weather conditions and in facilities in various states of repair.  Requires work in detention cells and exposure to inmates.  Requires frequent walking, stooping, bending, climbing of stairs and high ladders and lifting of moderate to very heavy objects (50 to 100 plus pounds) with the use of mechanical or people assists.

 The work requires the physical ability to operate a snowmobile, drive a four-wheel drive motor vehicle, and operate a forklift and other equipment.

Requires work outside of the normal workday and the employee will be subject to on-call assignments that requires carrying a pager and a cell phone.  Work may cause exposure to health threats such as sewage and blood-borne pathogens.
