A key member of the Albireo Energy team, the Controls Design Engineer will be responsible for:

  • The design of building automation systems for large commercial office buildings, data centers, and educational facilities.
  • Participate in sales turnover meetings to receive project mechanical drawings, specifications, and details from the sales team.
  • Communicate with contractors to obtain any necessary documentation and coordinate to ensure compatibility/feasibility of all equipment.
  • Coordinate with MEP Design Engineers to provide recommended specifications and sequences for particular customers or sites.
  • Apply the appropriate equipment and end devices to provide the most cost effective solution to meet the project specifications.
  • Prepare a complete engineering package of all required network diagrams, point to point wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, flow diagrams, valve and damper schedules, bill of material, and equipment submittals for approval by the client engineering firm and delivery to the installation team.
  • Provide technical support for the sales team, installation and commissioning team as well as technical support for the service division.
  • Assist the project manager with ordering of all required products and equipment.
  • Visit sites as required for field engineering building automation retrofits and upgrades or new construction quality control inspections.


  • Engineering degree (BSME or BSEE) from accredited college or university or a 2-year HVAC technical degree with 2+ years of experience in building automation or a relevant field;
  • Prior experience is preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry HVAC applications, ability to read and understand MEP drawings and specifications.
  • Understanding of flow dynamics to apply the appropriate measuring devices, control valve selection and sizing.
  • Knowledge of industry standard communication protocols; Ethernet, Modbus, BacNet and Lon to provide system network diagrams and integration to 3rd party equipment and systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
  • Microsoft Visio experience is preferred, AutoCAD or other BIM software is suitable.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities Works with the sales team to understand project specifications and needs of the customer and may participate in job site walk- throughs. Designs general systems for facilities which, depending on the system type, may include mechanical system layouts, electrical drawings, valve and damper schedules, fire alarm detection and notification layout, various security system devices, readers, etc., and control panel layouts. Interprets/designs sequences of operations to identify hardware and logic requirements for systems. Modifies sequences as required. Analyzes plans, construction contract specifications and codes to determine project requirements and risks. Assists Engineering Seniors with product selection. Performs Quality Assurance of material selection and suitability. Makes recommendations related to productivity improvement and cost reduction to increase customer satisfaction and increase profitability of jobs. Follows up with sales and management to ensure job scope, specifications and schematics meet customer needs. Provides start-up and checkout documentation to the Project Manager for more complex projects used in commissioning and validation. Participates in sales to operations turnover meetings to evaluate accuracy of sales estimates and job layouts. Performs peer review of engineering documents. Mentors, trains and directs design activities of Design Engineers and Assistants. Preferred Education & Experience Minimum of Associates Degree in business related technology, e.g., mechanical or electrical design or engineering, or related field/equivalent experience. Bachelors degree preferred. 2-5 years of successful experience in engineering/systems with demonstrated competence in principal duties. EIT, ASHRE, NICET or CISSP certifications are a plus. Good knowledge of engineering fundamentals, HVAC, mechanical systems, fire or security system, and business operations required. Able to read/interpret electrical circuit diagrams. Strong Knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD. Good influencing skills with the ability to negotiate and communicate at several levels of the organization. Good relationship building skills; ability to interpret customer requirements, identify needs and resolve issues in a positive manner.
