Position Overview
Teaches, advises and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies. Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university.
Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty. Serves on department, college, and university committee as requested. Prepares departmental reports as requested.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will teach a variety of introductory core courses per semester, both in Philosophy and Humanities ("Intro to Philosophy" and "General Humanities: Ancient to Medieval"), and may develop an upper-year undergraduate course in their area of specialty. Teaching load is 4/4 and may include courses in a variety of formats (face-to-face, hybrid, and online as needed). University service and scholarship are also expected.
College/Department Overview
The Philosophy program offers a solid grounding in logic, ethics, epistemology and metaphysics as well as the history of philosophical thought. The Humanities program offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of art, literature, religion, philosophy, film and aesthetics from diverse human cultures across history.
The Humanities and Philosophy department consists of fifteen full-time faculty members. The department offers BA degrees in Humanities and Philosophy and minors in Humanities, Philosophy, and Religious Studies, and an MA degree in Liberal Studies. Philosophy and Humanities are both components of the university's core curriculum.
Qualifications/Experience Required
A PhD in Philosophy or another discipline within the humanities (e.g. Anthropology, Art History.
Classics, English, History, Political Science, Theater) is preferred. An advanced degree in Philosophy or one of the other humanities is required. Applicants with a Philosophy degree should demonstrate some additional experience with interdisciplinary teaching. Applicants with a degree in humanities disciplines other than Philosophy should demonstrate evidence of an ability to teach within the Philosophy curriculum.
