Description of Duties:

  • Perform all duties of an AE I III Electrical Systems Engineer

  • As related to the design, manufacture, and qualification of electromechanical spaceflight hardware (e.g. valves, pumps, fans, subsystems instrumentation, and sensors) and specifically with regards to electrical power and data acquisition and control, independently and/or in a team environment:

  • Identify and quantify design drivers

  • Identify, flow down, and track requirements (customer and derived) throughout the program life cycle

  • Identify risks, to develop risk statements, and to help them plan risk responses.

  • Formulate and perform design trades studies

  • Collect, organize, maintain, and reduce data

  • Design hardware solutions for powering electromechanical flight hardware and for transmitting data and commands (digital and analog) between the flight hardware and the vehicle-level controller.

  • Formulate minimum-cost/maximum value Verification and Validation plans

  • Establish the technical baseline for electromechanical flight hardware production programs

  • Actively identify, track, and mitigate program risks

  • Generate formal documentation such as technical memorandums, analysis reports, design and development books, or product manuals

  • Integrate your electrical systems engineering data products with those developed by other team members

  • Lead a 2-5 person team and execute independent projects and/or small projects that are part of larger programs while achieving the technical scope on budget and on schedule

  • Work with electrical technicians to manufacture and test human spaceflight hardware

  • Interface with customers and suppliers to present technical and programmatic progress and as well as challenges that must be overcome

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience with electromechanical human spaceflight hardware (e.g. valves, pumps, fans, subsystems, instrumentation, and sensors) for human spacecraft, habitats, and spacesuits

  • Knowledge and experience with the electrical systems engineering product lifecycle, ranging from requirements development through design, manufacture, test, and operations

  • Knowledge and skills in applying electrical systems engineering principles and procedures to develop practical and tailored electrical engineering solutions

  • Knowledge of, and skills in, NASA human spaceflight electrical engineering design standards

  • Knowledge of, and skills in, NASA human spaceflight hardware Life Cycle, Certification, and Engineering processes

  • Knowledge of, and skills in, the NASA human spaceflight Safety Review Panel (SRP) Process

  • Knowledge of, and skills in, connector selection and wiring for electrical power distribution, instrumentation, and sensors

  • Knowledge of, and skills in, data interface protocols and associated hardware such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, I2C, SPI etc.

  • Working knowledge of NASA and ISS standard practices and requirements including safety, fault tolerance, and other unique disciplines

  • Ideally, but not required, knowledge of, and skills in, CAD software (e.g. SOLIDWORKS), and Product Data Management tools such as SOLIDWORKS PDM or Windchill

  • Skill in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)

  • Skills with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, power supplies, power analyzers

  • Ability to operate in an electronics lab and perform necessary troubleshooting tasks

  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and spoken form

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive work relationships; have creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness; have discriminating judgment, tact and sense of humor

  • Ability and proficiency in job-required software applications

  • Ability to serve as project manager on projects

  • Ideally, but not required, skills in project budgeting and forecasting

  • Ability to evaluate and train junior engineers in their duties

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent field and 8-10 years with system and/or hardware design and analysis experience

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent field and 6-8 years with system and/or hardware design and analysis experience

  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent field and 4-6 years with system and /or hardware design experience in the aerospace industry.

  • US Citizen or US permanent resident.

Job Description: Aerospace Human Spaceflight Systems Engineer III The successful candidate will report to the Chief Engineer and be responsible to independently and/or in a team environment: identify and quantify design drivers, identify, flow down and track requirement throughout the program life cycle, formulate and perform life support and thermal control system design trades studies. Additionally, this candidate must be able to formulate minimum-cost/maximum value Verification and Validation plans, establish the technical baseline for a flight hardware production program, mitigate program risk and generate formal documentation such as technical memorandums, analysis reports, design and development books or product manuals. Lastly, this candidate must be able to lead a 2-5 person teams and execute a small independent project or small projects achieving the technical scope within budget and scheduling timelines. The candidate must be capable of working beyond the typical 8-hour workday and 40-hour work week. This position requires direct support of the engineering department and spending nearly 100% of daily time in an office environment.
