Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The OLC is seeking a dynamic registered nurse (RN) to oversee the training department. This position oversees the complaint and training units, as well as coordinator positions required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The position is responsible for the initial orientation (state and/or federal) of all staff; overseeing the ongoing training of the long-term care (LTC) and acute care staff; tracking and ensuring timely completion of federal and state training for all staff; planning training for all staff in-person meetings and coordinating with outside presenters; and working to develop a strong training program for the office. The Program Supervisor works most closely with the LTC and acute care directors, supervisors, and medical facility inspectors. Due to the extensive work with the LTC staff, the Program Supervisor will also be required to pass the federal surveyor minimum qualifications test (SMQT) within 12 months of the hire date.

It will also support the delivery of program services agency wide by formal supervision of staff. Characteristic duties: setting priorities and performance standards for staff, training, subordinates and monitoring overall program performance for quality based on goals and objectives, analyzing legislative or other regulatory impact on service delivery.

May serve as liaison for the program to outside interests and may perform some direct technical service functions as necessary to meet customer demand. A comprehensive knowledge of the program, considerable understanding of supervisory principles and project management and clear communication skills are necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • RN eligible to work in Virginia; with clinical experience in an acute care and/or nursing home setting

  • Demonstrated experience supervising multiple programs and a variety of complex tasks

  • Ability to problem-solve and strategically plan

  • Strong communication skills

  • Experience with federal and/or state healthcare regulations

  • Experience with teaching adult learners

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and the use of software for presentations

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in nursing, healthcare management, education.

  • Prior Medical Facilities Inspector experience.
