Title: HR Generalist

Reports to: Sr. Director, Human Resources

Location: San Luis Obispo, CA

Our ideal HR Generalist will

  • Serve as a Human Resources point of contact to employees regarding benefits, Human Resources policies and procedures;

  • Conduct benefit enrollment for new employees and perform routine benefits audits;

  • Prepare new employee files and ensure such files are updated and organized;

  • Verify I-9 documentation and ensure up to date records;

  • Facilitate pre-employment drug screening;

  • Conduct audits of HR programs and recommend.

What you'll need in order to succeed

  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources or related field and 2-5 years of related experience;

  • Able to prioritize and complete a variety of simultaneous tasks with a high level of organization;

  • Be detail-oriented and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment;

  • Communicate information effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

  • Able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and gather and analyze information skillfully;

  • Must possess excellent computer software skills including MS Office, experience working within a database preferred.

The HRG is a hands-on role that works collaboratively with management and Corporate HR to get things done in a variety of people related areas. Using a consultative approach, the HRG brings perspective, insight, and a sense of partnership to the relationships built with the management team and employees. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Employee Relations:1. Serve as a resource and sounding board to managers to assure their management efforts are effective and allow employees to be successful and satisfied in their jobs. 2. Provide support, guidance, and coaching to all employees with respect to employee relations issues and interpretation of policy. 3. Serve as mediator with manager/employee problems, maintaining balance of employee/employer advocacy. 4. Work with legal counsel to understand all risks associated with sensitive employment practices and decisions. 5. Conduct investigations of employee concerns or complaints. Talent Acquisition:1. Assist management with the development of staffing plans based on departmental needs. 2. Participate in interviews and consensus selection meetings. Influences recruitment and selection decisions to best meet organizational needs. 3. Manage new employee orientation program and introduces new employees into company culture. Benefits:1. Through brokers, market the site-specific insurance plans and evaluates to ensure balance between the most cost-effective and beneficial coverage for employees. 2. Keep attuned to new developments and trends in employee benefit programs and recommends innovative, cost effective employee benefits. 3. Provide effective communication to employees regarding all benefit offerings. 4. Provide support to employees with individual problems with insurance. 5. Provide information and support to all employees for Leave of Absence benefits. 6. Complete all required documentation and administration relating to benefits programs. 7. Manage the site-specific Wellness Program, including wellness activities, wellness incentive rewards, mindfulness and ESI. Compliance:1. Act as Promega's CA wage and hour law expert, providing assistance to peer HRBP's for their CA branch employees. Includes partnering with Madison HR to coordinate CA required harassment prevention training. 2. Ensure compliance to company personnel policies through training, leadership and enforcement. 3. Maintain all employee files as well as all other required employee documentation.Other Support: 4. Provide insight and hands-on support as needed in regards to performance management, coaching, compensation, learning and development, recognition programs, and organizational review. 5. Advise and review compensation recommendations during annual merit process and salary analysis for new hires, promotions, and adjustments. 6. As necessary, make presentations to visiting customers, corporate office executives, regulatory entities, etc., regarding Promega Biosciences employees, employee programs, etc. 7. Through professional associations, seminars, journals, maintain awareness of current trends in and develops appropriate proactive federal and state employment law compliance strategies. 8. Perform administrative functions related to the Human Resources Dept., including: -attend staff meetings-participate in budget and goal setting meetings-participate in any meetings required to give Human Resources presence and perspective 9. Understand and comply with all elements of the PBI quality system appropriate for this position. 10. All employees must complete assigned duties in a safe manner, thoroughly familiarizing themselves with safety concerns, such as reading safety data sheets, wearing necessary protective clothing, including safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves, respirators, etc. All employees are required to attend regularly scheduled safety meetings. Responsible for monitoring safety practices of assigned area. MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelors degree in Human Resources or related field. 2. 3-5 years of Human Resources experience with a California employer, preferably in a scientific or technical environment. 3. Thorough knowledge of current federal and California employment and labor law. 4. Knowledge of current trends and practices in employee relations, recruiting, employee benefits, and compensation practices. 5. Training and practical experience in conflict resolution, coaching, or facilitation. 6. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with employees at all levels to establish and maintain positive working relationships. 7. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. 8. Comfortable working through ambiguous situations and advising management on appropriate course of action. 9. High integrity and trust. 10. Ability to take initiative to investigate and proceed with new ideas, projects, or process improvements. 11. Adept with MS Office programs and HRIS systems. 12. Must be detail oriented and possess strong organizational skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:1. PHRca Certification PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to move about the facility, meeting with employees etc. Must be able to occasionally move/lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires some stair climbing, as some offices are located on upper floor. Requires working with computers and telephone for long periods of time. Must be able to use a variety of other office equipment. Requires corrected vision for near (within 20cm) and far (greater than 3m) sight. Safety glasses must be worn in all but the administrative areas. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The primary work area offices on the main and second floor of the building. JUDGMENT: This position has strong impact on employee morale, employee retention, and organization business goals. Errors in judgment can result in poor hiring decisions, costly legal challenges, poor production due to poor morale and loss of valuable personnel. Participates with Corporate HR, General Manager and others in policy formulation. LATITUDE:Works independently, multi-tasks, sets and meets own deadlines. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Makes decisions that require choosing between multiple options, or may develop new solutions to resolve moderately complex problems.
