The City of Chesapeake currently has a Human Resources Generalist vacancy on the Talent Development/Employee Relations team within the Human Resources Department. We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Generalist to support talent development and employee relations matters including coordinating and facilitating New Employee Orientation and other training classes as assigned as well as serving as a liaison to assigned City departments for consultation on employee relations matters, policy review, and special projects.

Duties and responsibilities of the Human Resources Generalist may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Counsels and advises directors, managers, and general staff on complex employee relations matters including advice on disciplinary actions; assists management with the development of performance improvement plans; and takes action to resolve employee conflict.

  • Develops, implements, and monitors programs, policies, and procedures.

  • Conducts research, compiles data, and presents a variety of studies, analyses, and reports to measure success and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Enhances and drives a culture of continuous learning that will deliver an improved employee experience for all levels of the organization including supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

  • Schedules and coordinates learning programs, assists with development of training curriculum, and facilitates training sessions.

  • Stays current in knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and assists with ensuring compliance with EEO, ADA, FMLA, and FLSA.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires a bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience in human resources, management, public administration, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this job class requires a minimum of four years of related, professional, full-time equivalent experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office is also required.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Employee relations and training facilitation experience.

  • Local government experience.

  • CPTD, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, and/or SPHR designations.
