Human Resources Generalist

Non-Bargaining Unit, Exempt, Grade: 12, 2-year temporary

Location: This position will be hybrid remote with an affiliation to a campus.

Basic Function

The Human Resources Generalist provides information and quality customer service to employees and job applicants who contact VTSU Human Resources. The HR Generalist initiates and processes HR transactions and utilizes a variety of systems and software to identify, research, and resolve common HR questions. Friendly and approachable, they use problem solving strategies and their good communication skills to triage and appropriately escalate more complex inquiries to others on the HR team. Must be discreet as they will handle confidential/sensitive employee information. Must also demonstrate an on-going commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

HR Customer Service and Transactions

  • Provide information and quality customer service to employees and job applicants. Serve as first line of inquiry for responses; triage and escalate more complex inquiries as needed.

  • Research and refer to VTSU and VSCS policies and procedures to create consistency in communications.

  • Develop and maintain template responses for frequently asked questions.

  • Confer regularly with HR colleagues as well as other college personnel and external business partners to exchange information and resolve problems.

  • Become technically proficient with technology and systems relating to Human Resource operations.

  • Initiate, coordinate, and effect the day-to-day transactions of human resources including routine communications and messaging, data processing, and basic HR reporting.

  • Organize and maintain electronic personnel records related to various HR functions (employment contracts, tuition remission/waivers, performance evaluations, etc.)

  • Assist with data review and verification for annual service awards. Adjust service date errors in system of record as needed.

Recruitment and Staffing

  • Coordinate employment recruitment processes: edit and update job postings and place external advertisements; post positions using college software; conduct initial screenings for minimum qualifications; respond to incoming resumes and job inquiries; track and manage VTSU recruitments from hiring through onboarding.

  • Assist with the development and presentation of training and materials related to recruitment and onboarding HR systems and processes.

  • Perform I-9 verifications and train other designated college officials on required I-9 processes.

  • Coordinate new employee orientation activities; conduct benefits orientations for incoming full-time staff.

Marginal Functions

  • Perform other specialized or technical administrative tasks related to Human Resources operations

  • Assist in the preparation of employee contracts.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

This position reports to and is supervised by the AVP of People & Culture

Minimum qualifications

Associate's degree in Human Resources or other appropriate discipline and up to 3 years of relevant office experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills were acquired.

Preferred qualifications

Cultural competency, strong communication skills (verbally and in writing), and ability to assess and deescalate tense situations are highly valued.
