The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Central Michigan University seeks a Lecturer for a fixed term position in Human Geography. This is a full-time, one-year appointment for the 2024-2025 academic year (August 2024 through May 2025), with benefits included.

Duties include instructing courses through in-person and/or online delivery methods, grading assigned coursework, maintaining regular office hours, and participating in assessment. A possibility exists for supplemental salary for online teaching in summer of 2025. The appointment will commence at the start of the fall 2024 semester.

The successful candidate will teach four sections per semester. Depending upon the successful candidate's interests, courses will include some combination of classes from the following subjects:

Human Geography and Globalization, Economic Geography, Urban Geography, Research Methods in Geography, From Farm to Table: Food Systems in a Changing World, Infrastructure: Resilient and Sustainable Development, United States and Canada, Latin America, or Environmental Justice.

Course levels range from introductory to advanced undergraduate classes. Applicants are encouraged to indicate in their cover letter which of these courses they are interested in teaching. The successful candidate will also participate in the Department's assessment reporting.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must 1) possess a MS degree or equivalent in geography or a related field; 2) have excellent verbal and written communication skills; 3) demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching; and 4) be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in geography or a related field, and/or geographically-focused professional work experience, and/or those with prior experience teaching at the university level.

About the Department

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies has approximately 80 majors, 80 minors, and 20 students in certificate programs. Facilities include standard and active learning classrooms, three geospatial teaching labs, soils lab, student lounge, map library, the Michigan Geographic Alliance Office, and the Central Sustainability Office.
