HR Business Partner, Executive Director- Technical Operations

Position Description:

Reporting to the VP of Human Resources for Kite, the Executive Director for Technical Operations (Tech Ops) will be accountable for being the Business Partner leader for the Global Technical Operations organization. In close collaboration with the SVP of Technical Operations, you will develop the long-term people strategy, planning, and execution within the function. Kite Tech Ops employees are located across the globe, including our corporate headquarters in Santa Monica, California, our cell therapy manufacturing facilities in El Segundo, California and Frederick, Maryland, and our European cell therapy manufacturing facility in Amsterdam.

This role will have direct leadership responsibilities for the global Tech Ops HR Business Partner team (10+ team members), who provide HR support to all Tech Ops functions covering Process Development, Quality, Supply Chain and Manufacturing (3,000 worldwide employees). The role will also work closely with cross-functional partners within HR Centers of Expertise (Talent Acquisition, Talent Development & Inclusion, Total Rewards, Employee Relations, and HR Shared Services).

This is a site-based role in Santa Monica, CA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with SVP Technical Operations, and their senior leadership team, to establish and execute a globally consistent people strategy, organizational design and talent management approach - supported by a scalable and effective local HR infrastructure.

  • Lead a team of senior Human Resources Business Partners by driving a clear vision for the team and supporting the overall organization and HR transformation.

  • Develop and mentor a strong team of HR Business Partners to drive functional accountability and implement a high service level for HR delivery across Tech Ops.

  • Act as a trusted advisor and coach for the Techn Ops Leadership Team to support the continued development of leadership capabilities, strategic thinking, change management skills, and effective employee relations management.

  • Viewed as subject matter expert on both HR and the business and maintains contact with external sources to stay apprised of current trends and new legislative changes within the industry.

  • Actively looks for/learns about/rewards new ideas and innovative ways of doing things; allocates resources and removes barriers to advocating or investing in promising ideas.

  • Foster an innovative, agile, performance-based culture while aligning HR practices around a common set of processes to drive a continuous improvement mentality.

  • Partner with the Gilead HR COEs to provide input and deliver services into the design and execution of critical HR programs within Tech Ops

  • Analyze business needs, define the client group's talent management strategy, and influence recruiting decisions. Drive strategies to develop bench-strength and succession plans

  • Manages and resolves complex Employee Relations issues, in partnership with Employee Relations and Legal, through effective and objective processes, ensuring adherence to appropriate employment laws and Gilead policies.

  • Ensures organizational success in complex business situations such as mergers, acquisitions, exceptional business trajectories, and /or reorganizations.

  • Shape the organization, coach, lead and develop the team; foster cross-functional teamwork as well as a respectful culture based on Core Values/Leadership Commitments, which attracts, develops and retains high-caliber HR talent to build and shape a talent pool that will drive the organization's future successes.

  • Provide motivational leadership through personal example and by forming and leading a highly motivated and energetic HRBP leadership team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12+ Years experience in Human Resources

  • Experienced HR professional from the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry; specific experience in Manufacturing, Tech Ops or Research & Development preferred

  • Experience working in countries with a different/diverse cultural and business background

  • Leads with a global mindset and enterprise perspective, takes into consideration how decisions impact other parts of the organization/function, strives towards integrated solutions to maximize impact on business

  • Thrives at dealing with high levels of ambiguity and complexity, highly adaptable to different situations and agile in response, guides/supports the team/function in times of change

  • A data-driven approach to analysis and decision-making with the knowledge and ability to interpret and develop key insights from available data and drive strategy based on those insights.

  • Strong work ethic and personal integrity. Engenders trust and influence at all levels across matrix organizations.

  • Strong executive presence with the ability to command respect and gain credibility through sound business judgment, clear decision-making, excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrates in-depth consulting, influencing, negotiating, and conflict management/resolution skills.

  • Able to develop solutions to a wide range of highly complex problems, which require an in-depth degree of conviction, ingenuity, creativity, and innovation.

  • Has in-depth knowledge and understanding of Human Resources legislation/employment law, principles, policies, and procedures.

  • Able to discuss the fundamental issues of the HR functional areas (training, compensation, benefits, etc.) with management while not necessarily being the subject matter expert in each HR specialty area.

  • Prior experience and desire to manage a geographically dispersed global team. Is a champion, coach and mentor for the development of others.

  • Experience supporting large populations of hourly and or early career employees.

  • BA or BS degree, preferably with an emphasis in HR or Business.

  • A Master's degree can be substituted for 2 years of relevant experience.

  • Ability to travel extensively both within the US and internationally.

The salary range for this position is: $249,645.00 - $323,070.00. Kite considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
