This position is located at the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The VAPAHCS consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, Sonora, and Fremont. The incumbent in this position functions as a Housekeeping Aid Supervisor assigned to one of the Sanitation Units at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, or Livermore, as part of the Environmental Management Service (EMS). The incumbent directly supervises and provides administrative support to the unit to which he/she has been assigned. The incumbent supervisor has knowledge and understanding of the full range of sanitation operations.

The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Environmental of Care Specialist (EOC) to which his/her unit is assigned, and under indirect supervision of the Assistant Chief and/or the Chief of EMS. The incumbent will work independently in performing the duties of his/her position, but keep his/her supervisor informed of unusual events and the overall condition of the areas to which he/she supervise.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Counseling subordinates on work related matters, considering complaints and making necessary and acceptable adjustments.

  • Receives written and oral orders and instructions directly from the Site manager with input from the Chief and Assistant Chief, EMS, as needed.

  • Provides technical direction and equipment/materials/supplies as needed, ensuring that all that is required is available and maintained.

  • Inspects work in progress to ensure work is acceptable, on time, and at minimal cost, while anticipating problems requiring solutions.

  • Provides training, inspects work areas for completion, physical hazards and unsafe conditions.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: The position requires performance of work which involves continually walking, standing, stooping, lifting, reaching, and bending.

Continuous physical effort is often needed for the manual tasks. Incumbent must be physically able to operate power equipment for extended periods of time. Must be able to life, carry, or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally objects weighing more than 50 pounds.

The duties require considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration. When collecting trash, incumbent must follow specific safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment including face shields, safety goggles, protective clothing, glove, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent works indoors in areas which normally have heat, light and ventilation, but is required to frequently transport trash to loading dock and be exposed to weather elements.

Personal Protective Equipment must be worn in areas required (cap, scrubs, gloves, mask, etc.). He/she may work around areas utilizing high pressure combustible gases, noises and electrical equipment. Incumbent may be exposed to patients having contagious diseases and an environment conductive to nosocomial infections. He/she may be exposed to odors from patients and disinfectants (i.e., water in washing and scrubbing, dirt, excreta, vomitus, drainage); he/she may be exposed to irritations from cleaning agents; and he/she may be exposed to unsightly items such as, soiled linens which are bloodied or stained.
