The incumbent possesses significant knowledge of infection control and hazardous waste procedures to ensure compliance with all VA healthcare and safety directives and regulations. The incumbent of this position performs specialized tasks in completing cleaning duties in critical patient care areas that require the highest level of sanitation.

Sanitation maintenance tasks include but are not limited to: dust mopping and wet mopping, cleaning restrooms, showers, and related fixtures, vacuuming carpets, dusting ledges, washing furniture, washing walls, and removing and disposing of trash. Uses a germicidal detergent solution to disinfect all surfaces. Performs periodical sanitation maintenance that includes deep scrubbing or stripping floors, applying floor finish, shampooing carpet or furniture fabric, and wall washing. Is sometimes required to move furniture for the purpose of floor maintenance or for office relocation. Occasionally has to perform the full range of housekeeping duties in the operating room.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
