The House Manager is responsible for the management and oversight of all public areas, including lobbies, seating areas, and other designated locations before, during, and after scheduled events.

The Straz Center is seeking candidates to join our team! Located in downtown Tampa, the Straz offers flexible hours, event-based schedules including evenings and weekends, and a team-based work environment. Straz benefits for part-time staff include employee discounts and a 403(b) plan.

Essential Functions:

  • Directs and enforces standard house policies and procedures for all events.

  • Liaises with box office personnel to expedite all ticketing and seating requirements per show.

  • Coordinates with production staff or visiting company to ensure performances operate on schedule.

  • Compiles and records all performance reports and distribute to required departments per show.

  • Reports any variance in policy or procedure to Guest Services Manager.

  • Opens lobbies and Inside-of-House areas (key and radio holder). Clears and locks down theaters and lobbies following events.

  • Oversees preparations for all non-theatrical events in the lobby and outside areas such as exhibitions, receptions, special events, etc.

  • Supervises all front of house staffing requirements including Floor Captains, Ushers, Ticket Takers, Retail, etc.

  • Conducts Usher briefing meeting prior to each show.

  • Conducts housekeeping inspections and oversees house maintenance and cleaning crews as necessary.

  • Attends and assists with training sessions, meetings, and orientations when necessary or scheduled.

  • Monitors overall condition of public areas and reports needed repairs to necessary departments and secure results.

  • Expedites all medical emergencies regarding guests or staff.

  • Alerts Security and monitors and coordinates activity of medical personnel.

  • Compiles, completes, and distributes reports relating to emergencies.

  • Coordinates and expedites any emergency evacuation of theater houses, lobbies, and public areas.

  • Performs such duties as the Guest Services Manager (GSM) may direct and represents him/her if GSM is not present. i.e., supervises all team members and coordinates all functions for front-of-house activities for all theatres and public areas. The GSM/House Manager is concerned with the general health and safety of the public, staff, and Volunteers.

  • Submits unavailability for upcoming month to GSM no later than the end of the previous month.

  • Other tasks as directed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position provides direction to the Volunteer usher staff.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Contributes to overall team effort in planning and development and shares in the decision-making process, implementing and promoting all decisions in a spirit of cooperation.

  • Assists in departmental functions and special events and performs other duties when necessary to ensure the overall smooth operation of the department.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Must be willing and available to work on-site.

  • Availability to work evenings and/or weekends, as needed.

  • Ability to effectively supervise Volunteer team members and children.

  • Must possess functional professional level technical skills including, but not limited to, the ability to be proficient using Microsoft Access & Word.

  • Professional customer service and communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage medical and emergency situations.

  • Ability to remain poised and tactful when dealing with Guests (external and internal).

Education and Work Experience:

  • Prior experience supervising a team, staff or Volunteers preferred.

  • Prior experience with standard reporting processes via Word/Excel.

  • Experience managing Front of House.

  • Experience with crowd management and control.

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

The employee is frequently required to traverse the theaters; reach and communicate effectively. The employee is frequently required to operate scanners, office equipment, such as a computer, telephone, and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to ascend/descend 4 flights of stairs at a rapid pace and perform duties required to control crowds.

  • Must be willing and able to perform basic CPR and other emergency/life safety duties.

  • The nature of this job requires the employee to work on-site as a regular work routine.
