Pawtucket School Department Hospitality & Tourism (Culinary Arts) Teacher (Perkins/Local) Position Summary: A Secondary Hospitality & Tourism Teacher will instruct and train high school students in introductory hospitality and tourism management.

Included in instruction are hospitality industry principles; supplies purchasing, storage, and control; hotel and restaurant facilities design and planning; hospitality industry law; personnel management and labor relations; financial management; facilities management; marketing and sale promotion strategies; convention and event management; front desk operations; and applications to specific types of hotel, motel, and/or restaurant operations. In addition, the teacher may also instruct and train high school students in introductory culinary arts. Included in instruction are safety and sanitation, cooking and baking methods and techniques, advanced cooking and guest relations, international cuisine, identification of tools and ingredients, nutrition, menu development, food service math, and guest service.

Integrated throughout are essential employability skills for entry-level culinary positions Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop and implement lessons to teach skills required for students to master competencies in hospitality and tourism with the integration of English language arts, mathematics, and critical thinking skill development Serve as a classroom leader who works to provide exceptional instruction that affords all students the opportunity to excel academically and meet industry and State Standards. Deliver content-specific expertise to instructional planning in order to equip students with the skills necessary for success in the CTE Hospitality and Tourism Management pathway.

Prepare individuals to manage operations and facilities that provide food and/or lodging services to the traveling public. Provide group and individual instruction utilizing effective teaching strategies, aids, and equipment Evaluate students' skills and career readiness competencies, and maintain accurate student records Manage the classroom in a positive manner conducive to learning Work effectively as part of a team both within the CTE Department as well as schoolwide Collaborate in the planning process for modifications in curriculum, development of outreach activities, and real-life applications Participate actively in subject matter advisory committee and community outreach Assist in the recruitment, employment, or internship offerings for students Accurately report student attendance in a timely manner Perform other duties as required Create a positive learning environment that promotes high expectations and provides opportunities for all students to experience success Maintain positive, professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues Communicate with students, parents, and school staff to ensure that students are on track in their learning and making progress towards goals Is Knowledgeable of and Skilled at: Experience and knowledge in hospitality and tourism management CTE Standards RI Governor's Workforce Board PrepareRI Work-Based Learning Dual/Concurrent Enrollment Cultural competency Conflict resolution Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups Able to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents, and the community Work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment.

Independent problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans Meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team Reflective practitioner; strives to maintain and improve professional competence Required Qualifications: RIDE Certification in one of the following areas: Hospitality or Tourism CTE Certificate in Hospitality or Tourism Culinary Arts CTE Certificate in Culinary Arts A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university Experience with Hospitality and Tourism and Culinary Arts Preferred Strong communication skills Physical Requirements/Work Environment: Frequently required to stand, sit and walk Frequently required to talk and hear Occasional bending Must be able to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, reach, and stoop/kneel/crouch Occasional lifting or carrying weighing up to 25 pounds Must have clarity of vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify students and ensure safety The work environment is typically within a school classroom, although the employee may teach in a kitchen setting.
