Department Description

The Surgical / Oncology unit cares for a variety of oncology and surgical patients including those with urological, gynecological, colorectal, head and neck, liver and pancreatic diseases.

Complex wound care, ostomy care and tracheotomy care make patient education a priority for both the patients and their caregivers after discharge.

Multiple opportunities exist for nurses to coordinate innovative treatment modalities for the oncology patient population on this unit. Nurses are able to work in an area where a dynamic, interdisciplinary, supportive and healing approach is the focus.

Located adjacent to the nationally recognized UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, this unit provides the opportunity to work in a cutting edge environment with a community hospital feel. Chemotherapy certification is available and is required for the staff who administer chemotherapy.

Job Summary

The Unit Service Coordinator (USC), under direction of the Patient Care Unit Manger, Nursing Supervisor or Charge Nurse, functions as the focal communications source within the patient care unit and performs administrative functions directed toward positive patient care outcomes.

All patient care team members are responsible to meet patient needs, demonstrate willingness to learn new skills, and foster a harmonious work environment in which high quality patient care and customer service is consistently provided.

Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, physicians, other disciplines and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in a health care setting

  • Previous database/data entry experience

  • Medical Terminology knowledge

  • Ability to work in a busy, team-oriented environment

  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population

  • Willingness to be taught/learn new skills

  • Ability to understand and communication effectively in English both orally and in writing

  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks

  • Demonstrated customer service skills/experience

  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description

  • Basic computer skills

  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.

  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.

  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Department Description 12 South is a surgical short stay unit for primarily surgical services. Patients admitted to 12 South are typically recovering from surgical procedures, require aggressive physical therapy and have an established discharge disposition. The unit is able to accommodate the overflow of the transitional care medical/surgical patients transferred from the Critical Care areas, PACU and the Emergency Department. Patients commonly admitted to 12 South are recovering from the orthopedic, urological, radiological, dental/oral and gastroenterological surgeries. Additionally, the unit is able to accommodate patients requiring Medical/Surgical transitional care.
