Under direct supervision, receives orders for blood and blood products (including BioCARE), prepares blood and blood products for delivery, and delivers those products to customers.


Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations. Is responsible for bringing compliance issues to the attention of management.

Assures quality customer service to all customers.

Receives and prepares routine and special orders for blood products and services. Receives, inspects and determines acceptability of blood components. Releases blood components from observation.

Unpacks tested and untested products and routes samples for accessioning. Performs boxing and destruction of unacceptable products.

Assures accuracy of all manual and computer generated records including secondary review of assigned forms.

Monitors all storage equipment and updates applicable records and charts. Performs quality control of storage equipment and shipping procedures. Assists with corrective action for unscheduled storage alarms and documentation of equipment maintenance, as needed.

Assists with training.

Maintains Hospital Services equipment, vehicles, and work area.

Performs inventory of blood products.

Performs document control of department manuals and forms.

Prepares and labels blood components. Maintains records and performs computer entry.

Performs irradiation or transfer of blood components to an outside irradiation facility.

Performs all other duties, at the discretion of management, as assigned.


Knowledge/ Education

High school graduate or GED required.

Licenses/ Certifications



One year experience as a Hospital Services Tech or related experience required.

Skills/ Abilities

Good communication and customer relations skills in order to deal effectively with customers.

Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, stretch, reach and sit.

Detail oriented to ensure accuracy on paperwork.

Computer skills required.

Must be able to work on-call, various shifts including evenings and weekends, and overtime.

Must possess a good driving record.

Able to work independently.

Department Description Health Plan Strategy has primary responsibility for evaluating, securing, managing and maintaining the complement of Managed Care contracts required to define the business practices, mutual responsibilities and payment provisions between third parties and UCSF Medical Group and UCSF Medical Center, including Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and San Francisco plus UCSF Benioff Children's Physician's (UBCP) and other Clinically Integrated Networks. The third parties that UCSF affiliated entities contract with include large national and regional insurers, IPA's and other managed care entities, medical groups, direct payers, government agencies their subcontractors and a variety of specialized National or International referral sources and networks. The combined portfolio from these arrangements contributes in excess of 2.5 billion dollars in annual revenue to UCSF Health. Job Summary The position supports the Executive Director, Directors, Assistant Directors, Managers and staff of the Department of Health Plan Strategy and Contracting in carrying out their responsibilities for contracting on behalf of UCSF Medical Group, Benioff Children's Physicians (BCP), our Clinically Integrated Partners and UCSF Medical Center for services provided to members of health plans, government agencies, ACO Partners, other medical groups and third parties. The position's analytical skills play a key role in the Department and Medical Centers development, negotiation, projection and tracking of both physician (professional) reimbursement and hospital technical services reimbursement rates, as well as reporting financial results and communicating other significant developments to internal and external customers. The position is principally engaged in data acquisition, contract term development and interpretation, financial modeling which includes creating, loading and debugging payment schedules, algorithms, underpayment identification reporting and general financial analysis, along with the maintenance of key shared information resources and systems. The individual in this position is able to communicate the complex medical group (physician) and medical center (hospital), billing, clinical coding and utilization data that is crucial for contracting with third parties. Successful candidates in this position possess the background knowledge and skill that allow them to interpret analyze and synthesize a combination of clinical, technical (coding) and financial data, provide insights from their analyses and contribute information that will help improve the design and implementation of the payment structures and larger revenue strategies. Required Qualifications * Three years related experience * Bachelor's degree * In-depth knowledge of the workings of the Managed Care Contracting, Professional or Hospital Billing operations, Physician Fee Schedules and advanced analytics * Critical thinking and advanced problem-solving skills to manage highly-complex information, assess problems, and develop effective solutions * Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner; ability to produce and deliver presentations to diverse audiences coupled with the patience and persistence to work with complex data and logical hierarchies * Demonstrated interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with managers, professional and technical staff * Excellent computer and analytical skills including problem identification/solving and an ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively to meet deadlines under pressure are required * Excellent interpersonal and telephone skills and an ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally with a variety of audiences are essential * Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel & Word) and MS Access * The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations Preferred Qualifications * Knowledge of SQL, statistical or other business applications such as SAS, Quick Base, Cognos or Crystal Report Writer * Working knowledge of Epic * Experience in physician billing, claims and contract adjudication and follow-up or related analytical work - preferably in a hospital, medical insurance, group practice or managed care setting Licensure/Certification * N/A Living Pride Standards Service Excellence * Demonstrates service excellence by following the Everyday PRIDE Guide with the UCSF Medical Center standards and expectations for communication and behavior.
