Organizational Background

Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) is an academic and enrichment program designed to help students from low-income families in the DC-area reach their full potential. HGW supports over 370 students from 1st grade through 9th grade with year-round programming and support.

Working in partnership with our families, sending schools, and host schools, HGW is committed to developing the whole child through experiences that build problem-solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, instill respect for self and others, encourage a lifelong interest in learning, and inspire a meaningful, choice-filled life. The program begins when a student enters 1st grade and extends until they enter 9th grade, allowing for a rewarding long-term relationship between a diverse set of learners and the nurturing staff who work with them every summer.

Position Description

Horizons Assistant Teachers (HATs) work with the Site Director, Program Director, and volunteers to develop and nurture a safe, respectful, challenging, and inclusive learning environment in which students have a strong sense of belonging and safety. HATs will assist the Lead Teacher in the classroom duties of teaching of 15-17 students during Horizons' six week summer enrichment program at Horizons Greater Washington.

Both paid and volunteer positions are available. HAT experiences can satisfy course or service learning requirements. Paid HATs must commit to working for the entire duration of the program while volunteer HATs can choose to work during either the first half or second half of the program. Paid and volunteer HATs are required to attend the week-long orientation prior to the start of the program (dates indicated above).

Job Responsibilities

Horizons Assistant Teachers' areas of direct responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Attend a one-week orientation session prior to the start of the program

  • Help plan daily classroom schedule in collaboration with the Lead Teacher

  • Assist with instruction for the duration of the program

  • Supervise students during recess, lunchtime, arrival, dismissal, and field trips

  • Assist in swimming instruction as directed by the Water Safety Instructor and Swim Coordinator, which may include time in the water

  • Greet students and their family members before/after school and at special events throughout the program

  • Maintain classroom spaces, prepare materials for lessons, and conduct student observations, as instructed by the Lead Teacher

  • Work with small or large groups of students in all subjects

  • Read aloud to students

  • Provide short-term coverage for Lead Teachers as needed

  • Assist in evaluating program effectiveness through the use of surveys and observational

  • Meet regularly with Lead Teacher, Site Director, Program Director, and others as needed to accomplish goals and/or problem-solve as issues arise

Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a flexible, collaborative, reliable, and mature self-starter who is willing to adapt to the needs of the overall program. Applicants must be ready to help implement strategies to engage students in active learning. In addition to possessing a strong commitment to Horizon's mission, this position requires planning, communication, and coordination skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A passion for working with young people in learning contexts, especially those designed to address disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes

  • Ability to learn from feedback and work as a member of a multidisciplinary team

  • Basic swimming proficiency and comfort being in the water

  • Eligibility to work in the District of Columbia or the State of Maryland

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth, including tutoring or babysitting

  • An interest in pursuing a career in education

Job Responsibilities The Summer Program Assistant areas of direct responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following: * Organize, serve, and clean up breakfast, lunch, and snack items, complete required paperwork for the Summer Food Program, serve as the point of contact for the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), and oversee the coordination, delivery and clean up of daily food service * Collect and track daily student attendance, meal counts, and parent participation * Support program volunteers in the completion of daily program-related tasks * Support planning and logistics for field trips, enrichment activities, and special events (Parent Night, Ice Cream Social, End of Program Celebration, etc.) * Assist in ordering and organizing supplies, materials, books for the classroom and program with feedback from the Site Director and Assistant Site Director * Participate in program activities and build strong, supportive, caring relationships with Horizons students, parents, volunteers, and staff * Meet and communicate with Horizons personnel on a regular schedule * Contact families about student absences and misbehavior * Communicate on behalf of Program Director and Teacher with parents who speak Spanish including the possibility of translating materials that are sent home Requirements Minimum Qualifications * Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish * Self-motivated, hard-working, reliable, and organized individual with the ability to be discrete and professional * Excellent communication skills * At least 18 years old Preferred Qualifications * High school diploma Horizons Greater Washington Bethesda MD
