Reports To: Director of Exceptional Children's Program

Terms of Employment: Full Time 10 Months

Salary: NC State Salary Schedule

FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt

Qualifications:

  • Special Education Certification required, or working toward a NC Professional Educator's License

  • Experience working with students' requiring a Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan

  • Knowledge of CPI Non-Violent Intervention Practices

  • Knowledge of computer operations is required

  • A valid NC Driver's License with available transportation

Essential Job Functions:

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Broad knowledge of curriculum and instruction

  • Ability to work with students who may suffer from acute or catastrophic illness or injury

  • Ability to provide learning experiences in a variety of settings

  • Knowledge of child development

  • Knowledge of current educational research

  • Knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles

  • Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others

  • Ability to implement instructional activities for maximum effectiveness

  • Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn

  • Ability to work effectively with peers, parents, administrators and others

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

  • Planning and Preparations: Provide a learning environment that meets the needs of students with diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs; for students who are unable to participate in the regular school environment

  • Implement instructional activities provided by student's teacher(s) of record including any modifications/accommodations designed in the student's IEP, 504 plan and/or homebound instructional plan

  • Provide clear, compelling and engaging instructional assistance to students in their homes, virtual platform, or designated location

  • Deliver instructional strategies that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences

  • Pick up and deliver student assignments

  • Classroom Management

  • Maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures. Prepare required reports and maintain all appropriate records

  • Maintain a dependable hospital/homebound schedule

  • Maintain a positive, organized, and safe learning environment

  • Manage time, materials and equipment effectively

  • Use appropriate student behavior management techniques

  • Assist in enforcement of school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policies

  • Assessment and Evaluation

  • Carry out responsibilities for test administration, when requested. (i.e. handle materials in a secure manner)

  • Provide appropriate feedback to the student's teacher(s) of record regarding student progress during homebound sessions

  • Maintain specific records of data collection

  • Intervention and Direct Services: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum content

  • Apply principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery

  • Use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with different learning styles and special needs

  • Use appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet learning needs of all students

  • Provide appropriate instruction and modification for students with special needs

  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process

  • Provide instruction on safety procedures and proper handling of materials and equipment

  • Technology: Basic understanding and knowledge of use of technology

  • Use appropriate technology in instructional delivery

  • Use technology to establish an atmosphere of active learning (as appropriate)

  • Facilitate student access to the use of electronic resources (as appropriate)

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with students, parents, school staff, and other appropriate persons to assist in meeting student standards (as appropriate)

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with other professionals, student and parents

  • Maintain effective communication with parents to solicit input in relation to student needs (as appropriate)

  • Collaborate with peers to create quality instructional environment

  • Serve as liaison between the school and the home for the delivery of instructional services to students who qualify for homebound services in special education

  • Participate in IEP meetings (when needed)

  • Professional Responsibilities

  • Act in a professional and ethical manner and adhere at all times to the professional Code of Ethics

  • Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

  • Student Growth and Achievement

  • Establish and maintain a positive collaborative relationship with the students' families to increase student achievement

  • Works with families and campus staff to ensure smooth transitioning of students back into regular school setting

Physical and Cognitive Requirements:

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the EC Homebound Teacher classification within the Exceptional Children's Program of Hoke County Schools. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

  • Prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job

  • Understand and conform to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style

  • Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence

  • Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints

  • Write using standard convention in all languages required by the job

  • Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions

  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form

  • Communicate effectively and efficiently, both orally and in writing

  • Use/interpret job related terminology, mathematical formulas and functions effectively and efficiently

  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions

  • Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations

  • Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons

  • Operate a motor vehicle

  • Operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other job specific office equipment
