Sheltering Arms' largest day care, the Harriet Tubman Early Childhood Education Center in the South Bronx is a state of the art facility that boasts features such as a gym, auditorium, and advanced learning technology in every classroom. Serving working families in the community, this center meets a growing need for high quality, affordable early education, and adds to our widely reputed Early Childhood program.

Sheltering Arms is proud to announce the expansion of the Harriet Tubman center with the opening of a brand new Early Head Start Program! The Early Head Start program provides both center-based and homebased services in the community for expecting families, and children under the age of 3. The Program offers free child development activities and educational programs for eligible children and families through ACS-contracted Early Head Start programs, which are designed to provide the skills necessary to thrive academically, socially, and physically. Children's mental health and well-being are a major component of the program. Children are screened for developmental and social/emotional delays, with on-going assessments serving as a foundation for individualization of lesson plans and developmental activities.

Sheltering Arms is currently seeking a Home Visitor in our new Early Head Start Program at the Harriet Tubman Center. The Home Visitor will provide home-based support to expecting mothers and parents in their role as primary caregiver of their child. This is a full time position in the South Bronx; comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, life, vision, prescription, and pension plan.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing home-based support to families; and developing/planning activities for children that will support their optimal growth and enhance the relationship between parent and child; and organizing/facilitating parent-child socialization groups

  • Monitoring children's developmental progress, and maintaining accurate case records

  • Coordinating medical, and other community-based services offering comprehensive support to children/families

  • Other duties as delegated

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required; Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred

  • A Home-based Child Development Associate credential to be obtained

  • Prior experience with prenatal education, and children aged 0-3 years/their families

Sheltering Arms is seeking a Teacher's Assistant to work closely with the group teacher to plan and execute a program to provide day care for children that takes into account the: educational, social, developmental and health needs of the group, as well as the individual child. By providing a vast array of support to the classroom, the Assistant Teacher plays in integral role in the education of each child. This is a full time position in the Bronx. Essential Functions * To assist classroom Teacher/Infant/Toddler Specialist in the implementation of daily classroom activities and the care of children 6 mos. – 3 years old in the program. * To build responsive trusting relationships with each child in their care. * To provide support to parents in their role as primary caregiver. * To plan and evaluate a program that supports and monitors children's growth and development through the individualization of goals and objectives within the framework of an approved Infant/Toddler Curriculum. * To ensure the safety, health and wellness of children in the program. * To participate in training to expand skills and knowledge * Maintain accurate case records to meet the Early Head Start Standards * To be ethical in all dealings with children, families and community representatives. * To respect the privacy and confidentiality of children and parents. * Performs other duties as delegated Qualifications * High School Diploma or Equivalent, CDA or AA with emphasis in Infancy-Early Childhood Education preferred. * Prior experience working with young children 6 months-Kindergarten.
