The Hennepin County Housing and Economic Development department is seeking candidates for a Home Inspector position in the Housing Development and Finance division to assist with implementation of residential home improvement grants.

Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visit employee referral program.

Location and hours:

This position will be performed onsite both at 701 4th Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415 and other locations throughout the county complete inspections. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.

  • 4:30 p.m. with some flexibility and may extend to 6 p.m. on some days.

About the position type:

This position is a full-time, benefit earning position.

This position is internally classified as a Planning Analyst.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform lead-based paint inspections/risk assessments and clearance inspections in residential dwelling units.

  • Prepare lead-based paint inspection/risk assessment and clearance reports.

  • Perform Continuous Radon Monitor testing.

  • Prepare Radon Test results reports.

  • Monitor and maintain all inspection related supplies and equipment for the division.

Need to have:

  • One of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in urban/city planning, housing, business administration, public administration; research methods, statistics; behavioral/social science; public health; computer science/MIS or management science; or a field appropriate to the area of specialization.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in any field and a minimum of two courses in research methods, analysis, statistics, project management, planning, or evaluation and one year or more of relevant planning analyst experience (e.g., analysis, evaluation, and/or project management).

A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.Nice to have:

  • A Minnesota Department of Health Lead Risk Assessor License.

  • A Minnesota Department of Health Lead Abatement Supervisor License.

  • A Minnesota Department of Health Radon Measurement Professional License.

  • Experience:

  • Completing home inspections.

  • Completing lead-based paint assessments.

  • With radon measurement testing.

  • Performing home energy audits.

  • With residential construction.

Knowledge of:

  • Housing and building codes.

  • Building science.

  • Microsoft Office Suites, such as Excel and Access.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Work independently and in a team environment.

  • Climb and stand on ladders for prolonged periods of time to perform maintenance on building systems or equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
