Litchfield Public Schools is seeking a full time home economics teacher for grades 9-12.

Position Specifics:

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' knowledge and skills as they relate to early childhood education and services, nutrition and food production, culinary and food production, and textiles and design.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and administers secondary home economics/family and consumer sciences curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.

  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in home economics/family and consumer sciences courses as outlined in the Connecticut State Content Standards.

  • Develops student understanding and appreciation of home economics/family and consumer sciences skills as they apply to college and/or career ready goals.

  • Seeks opportunities for students to apply home economics/family and consumer sciencesin the real world.

  • Conducts ongoing formative and summative assessments of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.

  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

  • Using PowerSchool, organizes and maintains accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

  • Coordinates with other professional staff members daily, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.

  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, such as the Workshop Model and "Growth Mindset", as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

  • Knowledge of content area in terms of processes and proficiencies outlined in the Connecticut State Content Standards.

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile:

  • Connecticut State Certification as a technology teacher with a 045 Home Economics (Family and Consumer Sciences) PK-12 endorsement.

Education:

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

  • Masters Degree in related area preferred.

Experience:

Successful prior technology education teaching experience a plus.

If you enjoy working with students and are interested in being a part of the Litchfield Public Schools' staff on a per diem basis, serving as a substitute teacher can be a nice way to earn extra income while maintaining a flexible schedule. A bachelor's degree (in any field or major) is required to be a substitute teacher, and the current rate-of-pay is $88/day. Center School, housing grades Pre-K through 3, is located on Route 202 in the center of Litchfield. Parking is available on Woodruff Street, which is adjacent to the building. The office is located on the main floor, and the office telephone number is 860-567-7510. Litchfield Intermediate School, housing grades 4 through 6, is located on Plumb Hill Road, across from Litchfield High School. It is reached by an access road off of Constitution Way, which crosses Route 202 at the light approximately a mile west from the Center of Town. The office telephone number is 860-567-7520. Litchfield Middle School, housing grades 7 and 8, is located on Plumb Hill Road and can also be accessed off of Constitution Way. The office telephone number is 860-567-7540.
