Job Description:
Youth Development Institute (YDI) is a nonprofit residential treatment facility for troubled and mentally ill MS and HS students 12-18 years of age. We have 70 students, who live at YDI anywhere from 6 months to 12 months.
Fourteen of them are girls. YDI school is accredited with two thirds of our students, student with special needs (SLD-A-ED-SLI-HI). Our teachers are certified special education and general education MS and HS teachers. We are looking for a home economics teacher who would like to join our dedicated teaching staff, working with challenged students who need caring adults in their lives to teach and model effective life skills. The lucky teacher will have the opportunity of building and implementing a home economics/consumer science program specifically designed for our students in a new home economics room.
Our school year is year-round with 224 school days, 5 quarters, one of them being a summer quarter. School is M-F with Wednesdays a half day.
Classes range from 4 to 12 students usually 6-8th, 9-10th, and 11-12th grades. Each classrom has a Youth Care Worker with the teacher to manage behavior and support teaching and learning. Boys and girls attend school separately.
The work day is 7:30-3:30pm, school is from 9-2:15 pm MTThF. On wednesdays school is from 9-1pm with planning time and teacher's meetings. There is a 6th period every Tuesday and Thursday as an extracurricular period.
Teachers get 13 holidays, 19 vacation days, and 15 workdays. Benefits include medical, dental, vision insurance, company paid life insurance, new hire training and ongoing training, sick time, vacation time.
Teacher pay is for 12 months, based on experience. Salary is competitive.
Teachers need to be a certified special education or general education. CTE certifification a plus.
You will need to have a Food Handlers Card of be able to obtain one. We do not do restraints. We use de-escalation skills and Nurtured Heart.

Skill set needed:
Experience working with challenging students (possible verbal and/or physical aggression, suicide ideation, dislike of school, poor attendance and grades from prior schools, students with poor reading, writing and math skills to students above average in one to three subjects).
Prior eperience working with students with diagnosed mental illnesses
Knowledge of trauma-informed care
Knowledge of differentiation and ELL strategies.
Ability to modify lessons and accommodate learning and behavioral needs in the classroom.
Ability to implement education within a therapeutic environment.
Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers, therapists, and milieu staff.
Prioritizing learning through building adult/youth relationships.
