Home Companion Aide: Phase I & II Correctional Instructor (Part-Time)

The Home Companion Aide: Phase I & II - Correctional Instructor (Part-time) is responsible for teaching incarcerated individuals the designed course to prepare students to assist aged persons or their families with personal care and home maintenance. The part-time instructor is responsible for accurate record-keeping, planning effective and engaging instruction, detailed lesson planning, and reporting attendance on a consistent basis. The primary goal of the part-time instructor is to prepare adult learners for success by developing a new vocational skill set.

• Current NC license to practice as a practical nurse is required; current NC license to practice as an ADN registered nurse or greater is preferred

• Candidate must be willing to work in a correctional facility in direct contact with incarcerated individuals and pass a Department of Public Safety background check

• Candidate must also be able to develop lessons/course syllabus, maintain attendance time sheets, rosters, and create daily assignments for students

• Knowledge of employability skills, proper resumes, interviewing skills, and ability to work with inmates in a correctional setting is preferred

• A background in teaching is preferred, but not required

• Candidate should possess effective English communication skills, both written and oral, and be able to relate to and communicate well with individuals from all socio-economic levels and ethnic groups

Working Conditions

• Evening hours required; M-Th: 6 pm - 9 pm; two or three nights per week

• Candidate must be willing to work in a correctional facility in direct contact with incarcerated individuals

• Frequent standing and walking to monitor student progress

The duties of the Home Companion Aide: Phase I and II Correctional Instructor (Part-time) include, but are not limited to:

Mastery of Subject Matter

• Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their field or discipline

• Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field or discipline

• Connect their subject matter with related fields

• Stay current in their subject matter through current job; professional development; through involvement in professional organizations; and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops

• Use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate  

Teaching Performance

• Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning

• Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students

• Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse students needs

• Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments

• Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives

• Communicate effectively in both the educational, correctional, and health care settings

• Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and student learning

• Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter and modify where appropriate instructional methods and strategies to achieve student learning

• Implement and assess identified program and institutional student learning outcomes

• Perform assessments of students' cognitive, effective and psychomotor skills and incorporate core competencies into program content

• Evaluate student performance consistently and fairly

• Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit required record management documentation timely  

Evaluation of Student Learning

• Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives

• Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives

• Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning

• Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines

• Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances
