The Home Companion Aide: Phase I & II - Correctional Instructor (Part-time) is responsible for teaching incarcerated individuals the designed course to prepare students to assist aged persons or their families with personal care and home maintenance. The part-time instructor is responsible for accurate record-keeping, planning effective and engaging instruction, detailed lesson planning, and reporting attendance on a consistent basis. The primary goal of the part-time instructor is to prepare adult learners for success by developing a new vocational skill set.
Current NC license to practice as a practical nurse is required; current NC license to practice as an ADN registered nurse or greater is preferred
Candidate must be willing to work in a correctional facility in direct contact with incarcerated individuals and pass a Department of Public Safety background check
Candidate must also be able to develop lessons/course syllabus, maintain attendance time sheets, rosters, and create daily assignments for students
Knowledge of employability skills, proper resumes, interviewing skills, and ability to work with inmates in a correctional setting is preferred
A background in teaching is preferred, but not required
Candidate should possess effective English communication skills, both written and oral, and be able to relate to and communicate well with individuals from all socio-economic levels and ethnic groups
Working Conditions
Evening hours required; M-Th: 6 pm - 9 pm; two or three nights per week
Candidate must be willing to work in a correctional facility in direct contact with incarcerated individuals
Frequent standing and walking to monitor student progress
The duties of the Home Companion Aide: Phase I and II Correctional Instructor (Part-time) include, but are not limited to:
Mastery of Subject Matter
Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their field or discipline
Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field or discipline
Connect their subject matter with related fields
Stay current in their subject matter through current job; professional development; through involvement in professional organizations; and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops
Use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate
Teaching Performance
Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning
Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students
Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse students needs
Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments
Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives
Communicate effectively in both the educational, correctional, and health care settings
Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and student learning
Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter and modify where appropriate instructional methods and strategies to achieve student learning
Implement and assess identified program and institutional student learning outcomes
Perform assessments of students' cognitive, effective and psychomotor skills and incorporate core competencies into program content
Evaluate student performance consistently and fairly
Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit required record management documentation timely
Evaluation of Student Learning
Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives
Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives
Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning
Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines
Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances
