Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the HIV RN Manager, and acting within established scope of practice, the HIV Registered Nurse ensures the delivery of patient-centered Outpatient Ambulatory Health Services as outlined in departmental policies. The HIV RN conducts new patient intakes and coordinates all health and psychosocial services required by HIV patients accessing medical care services at SYHealth. The HIV RN supports departmental projects and initiatives, such as provision of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and meeting the RN needs of the Gender-Affirming Medicine and Sexual Health (GeMS Health) Clinic. Cultivates and maintains communication and networking with multi-ethnic communities, and organizations in the HIV/AIDS community, as well as internal Coordinated Services staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures the timely medical assessment of HIV, PrEP and/or GeMS Health clinic patients.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights, age specific needs, cultural and ethical beliefs.

  • Completes triage on walk patients to assess healthcare needs, ensure timely access to care and support an effective clinical workflow.

  • Performs telephone triage to evaluate patient symptoms and provide appropriate medical advice on treating symptoms and/or recommendations for escalating treatment.

  • Completes intake and coordinates co-visits for new patients and walk in patients.

  • Administers medications and injections per provider orders and submits morbidity reports to the Department of Public Health, as required.

  • Manages nurse directed telephone calls and is able to appropriately address the caller's requests.

  • Implements patient care functions including but not limited to: wound care, urinary catheter insertion/removal, suture and staple removal.

  • Provides education related to disease process, medications, STI treatment and prevention.

  • Manages prescription refills per protocol.

  • Documents pertinent patient information, nursing procedures and patient responses in EHR.

  • Identifies patient's learning needs, provides patient education and/or referrals to treatment adherence counseling and other resources as needed.

  • Assures that pertinent medical information is forwarded to proper department as needed for continuity of care.

  • Establishes effective working relationships with members of the health care team, patients, and families.

  • With support of HIV RN Manager and clinic supervisors, delegates appropriately and coordinates duties/activities of health care team members. Evaluates effectiveness of the care provided by team members and communicates feedback as needed to staff and managers.

  • Participates regularly in staff development trainings and clinic projects to support continuous quality improvement.

  • Participates in all multi-disciplinary meetings, department meetings and selective staff development trainings, as directed.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a flexible schedule to allow for evening and occasional weekend work as well as emergency coverage of shifts to meet the needs/demands of the department and related activities/events (i.e. Pride, AIDSWalk, etc.).

  • Upholds San Ysidro Health's Policies and Procedures, Core Values and competencies and applicable state, federal and local laws.

  • Utilizes effective communication methods and skills, following lines of authority as appropriate.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:


Required: six (6) months of experience as a Registered Nurse

Preferred: six (6) months of experience in HIV care


  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program

  • Preferred:Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BSN)


  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in California

  • Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification (American Heart Association)

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend medical information and terminology

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work with diverse patient population


  • Knowledge of HIV/STI transmission and prevention

  • Knowledge of health and social issues of HIV positive individuals

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Continuous standing/walking/twisting

  • Occasionally lifts pushes and/or transfers patients

  • Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness)

  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends

  • Reliable transportation necessary for occasional traveling to assist with providing coverage at SYH clinics within San Diego County
