Responsibilities

Requisition Number: 19-77894 Shift: 1 Work Schedule: Per diem schedule

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic exam

  • Perform technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens

  • Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens

  • Section the embedded tissue, using a microtome and mount the section properly on a microscope slide

  • Process mounted sections through routine staining procedures

  • Perform various immunohistochemicalon formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections

  • Process mounted sections through special staining procedures and prepare the stains and reagents needed for these special procedures

  • Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments

  • Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed

  • Record equipment log data in an accurate and timely manner

  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities

  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, analysis and reporting

  • Identify and document problems that may adversely affect test performance and perform corrective actions when needed

  • Effectively communicate with histology team members

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree is required

  • Experience in routine histology is required

  • Previous experience utilizing standard histology equipment is a plus

  • Experience embedding both large and small specimens is required

  • Ability to accurately read all labels and documents

  • Experience working in a high volume laboratory environment

  • Familiarity with laboratory SOPs and safety protocol

Verify specimens received. * Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, quality controls, chemicals and reagents. Notify appropriate personnel or supervisor of any shortages. * Prepare reagents, quality controls and mixtures needed for extraction procedures. * Follow proper chemical waste disposal procedures, and handling of chemicals according to the safety manual and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) protocols. * Follow proper disposal or cleaning procedures for used or contaminated lab ware, pipets and glassware. * Clean work areas with proper disinfectant. * Understand and follow quality procedures and protocols for security and confidentiality. * Perform and record instrument and equipment maintenance and function checks. * Understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and protocols as directed. * Understand and comply with all laboratory and safety policies. * Additional duties as assigned by supervisor About the Position: * The Extraction Technologist works in a fast paced, production type environment.
