The Idaho State Historical Society is an extraordinary system of cultural and historic resources comprised of the Idaho State Museum and Old Idaho Penitentiary, Idaho State Archives and State Records Center, State Historic Preservation Office, and Historic Sites Program. We seek to inspire, enrich and engage all Idahoans by leading the state in preserving, sharing, and using history and cultural resources relevant to today to inform and influence the future.

Responsibilities:

Program Administration

  • Monitors and reviews SHPO core programs to ensure accuracy and conformance to Federal standards

  • Consults with various members of management

  • Monitors expenditures

  • Analyzes interprets and applies laws, regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures to ensure program compliance

  • Provides staff supervision, training, technical assistance and may evaluate staff performance

Community Engagement

  • Expands and promotes awareness and utilization of SHPO core programs

  • Provides technical advice to increase understanding and knowledge of SHPO core programs which may include training, lectures and workshops

  • Participate in external partnerships to promote historic preservation efforts

  • Develops public exhibitions and represents the Idaho State Historical Society/SHPO to a wide range of audiences including historic preservation, business, education, and related organizations throughout the State

Research, Interpretation and Publications

  • Researches, and prepares multiple property documentations, context statements, articles, and other professional documents for publication

  • Creates and disseminates general promotional material regarding SHPO and the State Historical Society

Minimum Qualifications:

To satisfy federal funding requirements, applicants must meet the following in accordance with federal regulation 36 CFR Part 61 Professional Qualifications Standards for History as defined in Appendix A:

  • Graduate degree in history, or closely related field of study PLUS a minimum of two (2) years of full time professional experience in the preparation of scholarly narrative histories OR Bachelor's degree in history, or closely related field PLUS a minimum of four (4) years of full time professional experience in the preparation of scholarly narrative histories

  • Experience working with programs, and applying regulations and policies, of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966

  • Experience developing and making oral presentations to groups

  • Experience composing written narrative reports

  • Some knowledge of supervisory practices
