Histopathology Manager, IPC

The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

Function/Duties of Position

The ONPRC integrated pathology core (IPC) provides high-quality, state-of-the-art conventional and advanced histology, microscopy, and image analysis services and expertise to investigators and pathologists at the institutional, regional, and national level in support of research using NHP models in studies relevant to human health and disease. The IPC provides an integrated and comprehensive environment and infrastructure, working with investigators to meet their research pathology needs at all stages from project design through support of manuscript preparation. The IPC serves diverse research programs in neuroscience, reproductive and developmental biology, metabolic health and disease, and immunology and infectious disease in NHP models principally in support of NIH-funded studies, as well as the histology needs for diagnostic support of the ONPRC NHP colony. The IPC Histopathology section services include both standard and advanced sample preparation, embedding, sectioning, staining, and immunohistochemistry (IHC), as well as more state-of-the-art techniques such as RNA/DNA/BaseScope and multiplex IHC/ISH.

The IPC Histopathology section Manager provides general and specific oversight and management of the histopathology section of the IPC, which currently consists of the section manager, 3 histotechnologists and a research assistant 2 who all report to the section manager. The section manager reports to the interim IPC director, Dr. Charles Roberts, and also coordinates IPC operations with Dr. Srinivasan, manager of the microscopy section. In addition to oversight of general operations, this position will:

Work in cooperation with Interim IPC Director Dr. Charles Roberts and Manager of IPC Microscopy section, Dr. Sathya Srinivasan, to coordinate overall IPC services, including integration of analysis and tracking software platforms that comprise the interface between the histology and imaging components of the IPC Implement and maintain centralized software system for service requests consistent with arrangement used by OHSU shared resources Provide critical expertise in the design, implementation, and evaluation of histotechnology approaches, including advanced immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, digital pathology, and image analysis, for various research projects Implement and develop new assays and approaches to provide continued state-of-the-art resources to investigators Hire, train, and supervise research assistant/associate, and certified histologist-level employees, including up to 4 or more direct reports Ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery of services. Assists in the planning of program budget to direct service costs and staff allocation Have superior oral and written communication skills Contribute to summarizing IPC operations for annual RPPRs required by NIH and the IPC component of the P51 base grant renewal

Required Qualifications

Education:

• Master's in relevant field AND3 years of relevant experience.
• OR-
• Equivalent combination of Bachelor's in relevant field in conjunction with training and experience in standard and advanced histology techniques.

Experience:

• Has a minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience in histochemistry or biomedical research.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

• Ability to communicate effectively, including use and meaning of scientific terminology in both written and oral formats

• Ability to work both independently and in a small group setting

• Working knowledge (18 months relevant work experience) of Microsoft Excel and Word

• Demonstrated independence and competence to perform data management and analysis of research findings, including use of spreadsheets, graphics and statistical programs

• Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner, and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff

• Ability to prioritize work demands, and coordinate research protocols with other staff

• Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties requiring procedural steps to be consistent and completed fully and timely

• Detailed record-keeping, cataloging of samples, data entry and statistical analysis, laboratory maintenance, autoclaving and use of sterile techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• Degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal sciences, Immunology or Pathology

• Experience with analyses of nonhuman primate studies, managing research projects for multiple investigators, and performing, analyzing and reporting results of histological results provided

Experience:

• 5 years laboratory work experience performing an array of histological and histochemical analyses

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

• Maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and equipment

Additional Details

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work schedule is routinely Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM on campus at the ONPRC; evening and weekend work as required by scope of the position

• Work is performed in laboratory settings with potential risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, materials, animals and equipment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE:

• Able to lift/move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs

• Ability to stand for 5 continuous hours at a time

• Ability to work on a computer for 8 continuous hours a day

• Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
