General Statement of Duties:

The Team Leader coordinates and monitors the day-to-day work of histology employees; assists Manager with schedule management and personnel management activities; provides technical level services in the area of expertise.

Essential Job Functions:
1.Coordinates and monitors daily activities of histology employees; assists Manager in personnel management activities that may include interviewing, work allocation, orientation and training, evaluating performance; making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivating employees to achieve peak performance.
2.Prepares and processes surgical, autopsy, bone marrow, body fluids, and biopsy specimens for gross and microscopic examination by a pathologist. Prepares frozen sections of surgical specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Prepares solutions for stains and special procedures. Performs the more advanced and specialized histology techniques.
3.Performs preventive maintenance on common instruments and keeps records of maintenance as prescribed. Understands and performs basic quality control: identifies quality control problems, participates in quality assurance monitors.
4.Assures that results are satisfactory for pathological examination. Demonstrates pro-active problem solving skills to include identifying a problem and taking appropriate action; knows when to seek guidance to complete troubleshooting protocol; communicates necessary information to Manager.
5.Acts as a resource to customers, both within the department and outside the department. Accepts responsibility for own development to include cross-training in other functions or positions to ensure satisfactory operation of the department or to permit flexible staffing assignments.
6.Reviews, updates and writes histology laboratory procedures.

Shift Information: 4:00 am shift / Tuesday through Saturday

Minimum Education and Experience:

Baccalaureate degree is preferred. 5 years of experience in clinical laboratory or histopathology.

Minimum License and Certificates Required:

One of the following certifications is required: HTL (ASCP), HT (ASCP), MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(AAB), CLS(NCA), MT(HEW), CLT(NCA), MLT(ASCP), or MLT(MT).

Reporting Relationships:

Report to: Laboratory Facility Manager or Laboratory Section Manager

Direct Reports: Clinical Lab Assistant, Histology Tech I, Histology Tech II, CLS I, CLS II, CLS III.

Equipment Utilized:

Meditech, laboratory equipment, and common office equipment.

Histology Technician - Expectations: Organizes, processes, cuts, stains, and otherwise prepares tissue for microscopic evaluation by the Pathologist. He/She ensures that the organization of gross specimens and the accurate processing in staining in staining of tissue sections is completed. Qualifications: * Licensure/ Certification/ Registration: Not required * Education: Associates degree and 1 year full time experience in Histology under a certified Pathologist. * Experience: One (1) year experience in histology section. * Special Qualifications: Effective communication skills; both orally and written. Computer skills needed. Ability to work with others within a team to ensure quality patient care. Strong problem solving skills. Key Accountabilities / Competencies: 1. Follows assigned work detail by efficiently prioritizing work load. 2. Performs special stains, including controls, logs in results of controls. 3. Must have the experience (minimun one year on the job) to troubleshoot/resolve processor problems. Documents corrective action when necessary. 4. Must have quality skills in cutting, staining and embedding of tissue samples. 5. Is accurate in daily billing counts and recording Quality Control. 6. Performs accurate labeling and filing of slides and blocks. 7. Keeps Gross Room and Histology stocked, cleaned and free of safety hazards. 9. Communicates with lab personnel and medical professionals in resolving problems, promoting harmonious relationships between hospital departments and coordinating services rendered by the laboratory. 10. Demonstrates knowledge of the occurence reporting system and uses the system to report potential safety issues. 11. Is willing and able to be available (on-call) during the weekend (Friday night through Monday morning) to come into the hospital to fix or repair any insturment malfunction in the Histology department.
