General Description of the Job Class
Perform routine histopathological tests to obtain data for use by a physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Perform muscle biopsies, histochemical and other histopathological laboratory tests and examinations to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; record determinations and results for review by physicians.
Prepare equipment for processing, embedding, cutting, complex special staining and mounting tissue; label, record and prepare slides of tissue to the pathologist for microscopic examination and diagnosis; obtain specimens from operating rooms and record in log book; perform frozen crytostat sectioning as required.
Set up equipment, reagents, instruments and apparatus for specific laboratory procedures.
Make work assignments; review the work of assigned employees; assist in the training of new personnel.
Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel as required.
Check the work of assigned employees to ensure that work performed meets specified quality standards.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated competency in histological techniques for a wide range of specimen materials.
Exhibit supervisory skills in successfully completing work assignments, training and documentation oversight, as assigned.

ASCP certification (or equivalent) as a Histology Technician
Two years experience in a histology laboratory post-certification.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
ASCP (or equivalent) as a Histology Technician or Histotechnician.
