The histology laboratory assistant will provide support to the histology technicians by handling routine, non-technical tasks in the histology lab.
Performs routine opening and closing procedures in the histology lab including starting up and shutting down of equipment as well as performing quality assurance procedures and documentation.
Stores blocks, slides, and paperwork according to histology laboratory procedures.
Handles communication between pathologists and the histology personnel to ensure all requests and inquiries are handled in a timely manner.
Delivers tissue slides to the assigned Assistant Medical Examiner, Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, or the Executive Director & Chief Medical Examiner on a timely basis.
Completes the histology laboratory electronic case file, entering data as necessary to Path Assist or other databases.
Pulls stock jars for pathologists as requested.
Responds to external requests to retain, release, or prepare specimens in accordance with histology laboratory procedures.
Assists in the destruction of wet tissue according to histology laboratory procedures.
Transports specimens to and from off-site storage.
Follows all safety and quality assurance/quality control protocols.
Participates in professional training and laboratory assessments as requested by the Morgue and Histology Laboratory Manager.
Maintains a log of tissue samples entering the histology lab.
Maintains cleanliness of the histology lab.
Other duties as assigned.

Must take the HRRM Clerical Skills Test and score a minimum of 85% with a typing speed of 30 w.p.m. and 85% accuracy.

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
Capable of understanding and adhering to strict protocols for the handling and storage of tissue samples, glass slides, and blocks.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
Valid driver's license to the facilitate the transport of off-site samples using a County vehicle.
Must provide a handwritten assignment of any topic, and a handwritten sample of the numbers 1 through 10 with the application.
Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
May require long periods of sitting, standing, walking, stooping, and bending.
