UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is excited to be hiring a PART-TIME Histology Lab Technician. This role will be scheduled Monday through Friday 20 daylight hours per week.

Purpose:

Under supervision, assist in the routine processing and preparation of tissue samples and various solutions and stains in a clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.

  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Perform other duties and assignments as assigned by lab leadership.

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

  • Supports academic mission of department.

  • Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining.

  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

  • Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

Qualifications

High school diploma. 1 year of clinical laboratory experience or 1 year of experience through training in a laboratory either on the job or through a vocational school.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Histology Technician (HT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred.

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. Medical Lab Technician salary starts at $16.63/hour. Medical Technologist salary starts at $20.49/hour. Sign-on bonus up to $7,000 available for candidates meeting their education, licensure, and experience requirements at the Medical Technologist level! Responsibilities: * Conduct, direct or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection and implementation. * Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols. * Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. * Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis as delegated. * Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision. Qualifications Medical Technologist: * Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, * OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, * OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory, * OR successful completion of the HEW (HHS) proficiency examination, OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA 88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing. * Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory. * Prefer medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience. Medical Lab Technician: * Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA), * OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent certification, * OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. * Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. * Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
