Schedule: Full-Time 40 hours Tuesday

  • Saturday 7:30 am

  • 4:00 pm

Reports directly to the Histology Assistant Section Lead. Assures total compliance with TJC and CAP guidelines during all procedures. Must handle biohazardous and infectious material while following proper safety precautions. Works cooperatively with all hospital and laboratory staff through verbal and written communications in order to resolve problems, exchange information, receive instructions, establish protocols, and process information concerning cases.

  • Embeds tissue for the histologists.

  • Coverslips slides and aids in signing-out cases for the pathologists.

  • Responsible for glass slide and paraffin block filing in histology and pathology.

  • Assists the pathologists' assistants/grossing techs in the grossing room and aids in specimen collection for pathology.

  • Under the direction of the AP Operations Manager and the Chief of Pathology, accessions pathology specimens.

  • Under the direction of the AP Operations Manager and the Chief of Pathology, assists the PA/grossing techs and pathologists in grossing pathology specimens, if qualified under CAP regulations.

  • Performs and/or assists with gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens.

  • Maintains a clean and safe work area according to infection control and chemical hygiene guidelines.

  • Maintains equipment according to formal maintenance program in the department.

  • Maintains and labels stains and reagents according to department and CAP guidelines.

  • Fills client supply orders.

  • Responsible for specimen send-outs, including slide and block requests and returns.

  • Ensures accurate transcription of patient reports, including histology and immunohistochemistry results, according to department guidelines.

  • Ensures proper disposal of wet tissue and chemicals according to department guidelines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Histology laboratory environment includes biohazardous and chemical materials. Must be trained in basic laboratory safety techniques, infection control, safe chemical handling and OSHA safety regulations.

  • Environment may include moving equipment parts and have background noise levels.

  • Duties may include lifting up to 50lbs (5 gallon cubes).

  • May be required to work rotating shifts or weekends, if needed by the department

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Associates degree preferred

  • 3-5 years in a hospital Laboratory preferred

Monday - Friday, 6:30 am - 3:00 pm Sign-on Bonus: $5,000 * The Lead Technologist in Ultrasound is involved in hands on patient care. In addition to the principal duties and responsibilities of a staff sonographer, the Lead Technologist will assist the Ultrasound Supervisor to coordinate the daily operations of the ultrasound department and facilitate excellence in patient care. * The Lead Sonographer will maintain a strong collaborative relationship with the Ultrasound Supervisor, department and hospital leadership, ordering providers, interpreting radiologists and staff sonographers. * The Lead Ultrasonographer will also participate in the orientation and instruction of new sonographers and students * Performs all staff sonographer duties as assigned and required. Ensures that all exams are performed according to department quality standards and made available for interpretation in a timely fashion. Enters the appropriate charges and exam data into the hospital and department information systems accurately for all exams. * Works with US supervisor and medical director to coordinate patient flow on a daily basis. Fills in for US supervisor as requested. Assists clerical and support staff as necessary. * Performs quality control checks for exams and equipment as established by the division. Possesses a thorough knowledge of equipment operations, imaging techniques, protocols, and equipment troubleshooting. Identifies equipment problems and communicates to immediate supervisor. * Works with the Ultrasound Supervisor to ensure that imaging standards are in accordance with AIUM standards. * Monitors adherence to safety policies established within the hospital and department. * Actively involved in ongoing Quality Improvement Projects within the department/modality, such as hand hygiene audits, c-list, patient satisfaction, safe/ergonomic work practices and education. * Remain knowledgeable with new technology developments, protocol changes and clinical advancements. Assumes a leading role in ensuring the success and quality of all exams. * Participates in orientation and instruction of various personnel and sonography students. Assists with the facilitation of the ongoing development of all staff within ultrasound. * Collaborates with affiliated college-based sonography programs to facilitate a clinical learning experience for student sonographers. Evaluates and assists with student-performed exams. Provides feedback to college and students according to program policies. * Maintains effective working relations and communication with divisional, departmental, and hospital personnel. Recommends changes to the protocol that would improve the overall quality and care for the patient. * Maintains availability of supplies and inventory as assigned. Ensures all expendable products are within safe use periods. * Works with Ultrasound Supervisor to adjust staffing schedules as needed. * In conjunction with the Ultrasound Supervisor and technologists, assumes shifts not covered. Qualifications * 2-4 years clinical experience preferred * Must have graduated from an AMA accredited Ultrasound Program. . * Associates Degree required. Bachelor's Degree preferred * Must hold and maintain a current ARDMS certification in Ultrasound, with preference toward a secondary and/or tertiary advanced certification that supports department operations and practice (e.g. obstetrics/gynecology; breast). * Must hold and maintain a current BLS/CPR.
