Essential Histology Assistant job functions and responsibilities:

  • Processes tissues to cut, stain, embed, accession and prepares slides for examination accurately.

  • Processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination, identifies, prepares, cuts and stains tissue for pathologist, under the supervision of pathologist and histotechs.

  • Performs automated and manual testing.

  • Assesses specimen integrity ensuring appropriate identification.

  • Performs and documents QC, instrument maintenance and calibration as indicated by policy.

  • Monitors specimen integrity and ensures acceptable levels of performance.

  • Pick up gross specimens in a timely manner and accurately prepares sections of tissue for slide preparation.

  • Demonstrates correct technique to prepare hematoxylin and eosin slides.

  • Prepares solutions according to procedure manual.

  • Assists pathologist with frozen sections with accuracy.

  • Performs special stains with accuracy.

  • Prepares send outs accurately.

  • Enters information into LIS with accuracy.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Associate's Degree in Science or related field (preferred)


  • Previous hospital or laboratory experience (preferred)


  • PRN

  • Weekend and Holiday rotations

Frankfort Regional Medical Center (FRMC) is a 173 bed, acute care facility, Level III Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center, and Accredited Chest Pain Center. We primary serve the areas of Franklin, Anderson, Owen, Woodford, Shelby, and other surrounding counties. Works under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and Program Director and under close direction of the Registered Nurse administering patient care and related activities, services and /or procedures to promote the physical and emotional health and personal comfort needs for assigned patients. The Mental Health Technician is responsible for patient safety, as well as assisting with daily hygiene, ambulation, and other delegated tasks, and adhering to all regulations in providing safe, quality care to our patients. Delivery of patient care includes data collection, documentation, communication and implementation of patient care interventions in accordance with state Nursing Practice Acts and generic/unit structure standards. Functions as a member of the treatment team and accepts responsibilities for specifically assigned duties, such as patient observation rounds, suicide risk observation and assisting with behavior modification programs. SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS ROLE: 1. Greets and interacts with all patients, significant others, visitors, guests, in a cheerful, courteous, positive manner at all times. 2. Assists in the admission of new patients and prepares them for patient care. 3. Completes documentation in a timely, proficient and complete manner. 4. Assists with maintaining patient's activities of daily living. 5. Observes for any changes in the patient's condition and report changes or concern to the primary RN or Charge nurse. 6. Assists in providing safety and prevention of injury for all patients (Suicide, assaults, falls, skin integrity, infection, etc) 7. Ensures patient area, nurse station and department is clean, tidy and in order. 8. Ask the 3 Ps (pain, potty, positioning) prior to leaving a patient room. 9. Assist in updating and maintaining white boards. 10. Daily use of Service Excellence and Customer Service Initiatives with every patient and every family member every time. 11. Demonstrates expertise in mental health promotion and maintenance of high quality comprehensive patient care. 12. Displays respect for patient's integrity, patient information and patient rights. 13. Demonstrates expertise in the performance of tasks necessary to maintain a therapeutic milieu and optimum patient care. 14. Escorts patients to and from scheduled activities in a safe and professional manner. 15. Performs all specific skills assigned including monitoring vital signs in a complete and accurate manner. 16. Maintains high level of interpersonal relationships with program staff. 17. Utilizes appropriate skills in telephone etiquette when answering the telephone, making sure to record correct messages and pass along to appropriate staff, including patient inquiries. 18. Demonstrate efficiency in maintaining support services, which are vital to effective program operation. 19. Preforms patient rounding and monitoring. 20. Performs other duties as assigned.
