Job Description

The BCSL Histotechnologist will perform all tasks to support a CLIA/CAP laboratory with minimal supervision. Responsibilities for this position include:

What you will be doing:

  • Process and prepare fixed tissue using histologic, immunohistochemical, and in situ hybridization techniques.

  • Prepares microscopic slides for diagnostic processing, microtomy, mounting (paraffin/frozen sections), staining (routine/special/IHC/ISH), slide and block labeling & coverslipping.

  • Assess the quality of slide preparations and troubleshoot procedures if necessary.

  • Providing routine preventative maintenance/cleaning, coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance of histology laboratory equipment/instruments to include supporting the implementation, validation and evaluation of new equipment used in the histology laboratory.

  • This position requires the ability to document testing parameters and results, following protocols, procedures and specifications to generate quality product.

  • Ordering & shipment tracking for laboratory supplies/reagents and customer samples with inventory management and lot-to-lot validation of reagents/chemical, sample tracking and processing samples in the lab workflow to include microtomy, embedding, tissue fixation/processing and staining procedures (H&E/special stains/IHC/ISH).

  • Use and maintain various forms of basic laboratory & histology equipment such as: microtome, cryostat, automated tissue processor, TMA instrument and automated H&E/IHC stainer.

  • Perform basic lab maintenance such as cleaning dishware/surface areas, chemical inventory, hazardous waste disposal, etc.

  • Understand tissue procurement regulations including HIPAA and informed consent

  • Perform all tasks with consistent quality results, adhering to established laboratory policies/guidelines while maintaining a safe working environment in a CAP/CLIA lab.

  • Accurately document recording to comply with various internal and external regulations. This will include writing or revising procedures and work instructions in collaboration with the manager and quality representative.

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. in Biological Science, Basic Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 4+ years' related work experience

  • ASCP certification as a Histology Technician (HT) or Technologist (HTL)

  • Attention to detail and works to complete all tasks in an organized timely manner

  • Capability of performing multiple tasks simultaneously and accurately

  • Good written and verbal communication

  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements concerning chemical hygiene, biohazards and blood borne pathogens

  • Demonstrated capability of safely handling carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials/reagents

  • Knowledgeable in Pathology nomenclature

Preferred qualifications:

  • Understanding of CLIA and/or CAP regulations/requirements

  • Over 4 years of histology experience in a clinical or research laboratory

  • Writing/reviewing/collaborating for procedures, SOPs, and protocols

  • Extensive exposure to pathology tissue/disease nomenclature

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and familiarity with Oracle and or Agile or other inventory control and document change systems is preferred

  • Experience in one or more of the following: Microtomy, embedding, H&E staining, tissue fixation/processing and grossing, analytical techniques, Immunohistochemical techniques

  • Do we want to say 2 years work exp here?

The US pay range for this full-time position is $78,288.00 - $122,325.00/yr, plus eligibility for bonus, stock and benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum new hire pay for the position across the relevant US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
