About the Job

Incumbent serves as a Highway Technician at an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) testing laboratory and runs various test methods on materials incorporated into INDOT construction or maintenance contracts. Incumbent will also visit material producer's plants, construction job-sites or other INDOT facilities to collect material samples for testing. Performs maintenance activities, including snow and ice removal, as required.

This position is typically filled at a salary of $34,320 annually. Typically under filled as a Highway Technician 2.

A Day in the Life

  • Employee is responsible for travel throughout the district to sample and test road construction materials;

  • Employee is responsible for learning and becoming proficient in various test methods performed on road construction materials;

  • Employee is responsible for performing tests on road construction materials in a lab setting;

  • Employee is responsible for completion of all job assignments and accuracy of records, forms, reports, and technical information disseminated;

  • Employee must communicate tactfully and effectively with contractors and representatives of material suppliers;

  • Employee must communicate tactfully and effectively with INDOT employees within other departments as well as INDOT employees within this department;

  • Employee is responsible for assisting with loading, moving, and unloading supplies and materials;

  • Employee is responsible for removal of snow and ice from highways and interstates and performs related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow and other winter operations related duties.

What We're Looking For

  • High school graduate or equivalent is preferred;

  • Must possess a valid drivers' license;

  • Must have valid CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days;

NOTE: The Indiana Department of Transportation provides CDL training, pays for eligible employees to take CDL exams, and reimburses employees for eligible expenses for obtaining a CDL including the CDL permit and license following their hire date.

  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment;

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Incumbent reports and is directly accountable to the District Materials Engineer. The Independent Assurance Technician (IAT) works in the District Testing Department and is responsible for implementing the Department's Qualified Technician Program and Independent Assurance Program (IAP). This position maintains and operates specialized equipment to aid in the collection of data for Indiana's road structure. This position is typically filled at a salary of $28,080.00 annually. Salary for this position is commensurate with education and job experience. A Day in the Life * Conducts proficiency checks on Qualified/Certified technicians through administering written exams and performing the appropriate proficiency testing on specified test methods. * Performs comparison sampling and testing in accordance with the Department's IAP program. * Instructs trains and assists qualified acceptance testers in proper testing procedures and in correcting deficient testing procedures or equipment. * Maintains documentation including completion of proficiency checklists, filing paperwork, maintaining the SiteManager Database and non-comparison investigations. * Prepares annual Department report for submittal to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). * Maintains and calibrates construction field testing equipment. * Assists in annual audits of certified material suppliers. * Supervises/Participates in PCC trial batch demonstrations and embankment and subbase test pad construction. * Performs verification sampling of pre-approved materials. * Teaches Qualification training classes as required. * May represent the Testing Department in pre-construction conferences. * May perform winter maintenance duties. * Performs related work as required. What We're Looking For * Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. * An associate degree in a related area is preferred or 2 years of related experience. * Must possess a valid driver's license. * Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or must obtain within 90 days of employment. * Basic knowledge of and the ability to operate and maintain material testing equipment. * Must have working knowledge of computer programs. * Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather. * Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents such as American Association of State Highway Transportation (AASHTO), American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), INDOT specifications, and Indiana Test Methods (ITM). * Must be able to work independently. * Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly; * Knowledgeable and proficient in all sampling and testing practices and procedures involved in acceptance testing; Confident in ability to correct individuals when deficiencies are encountered. * Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team; * Excellent mathematical skills. * Proficient computer skills. * Ability to read, interpret and apply INDOT standard specifications, supplemental specifications, recurring special provisions, contract proposals, etc. * Ability to use technical forms related to recording and calculating test results. * Ability to use SiteManager or similar database program. * Extensive knowledge of the Qualified Technician Program and all required acceptance test methods. * Ability to instruct individuals in both the classroom and in the field on proper testing procedures.
