By joining the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet/District 7/ as a Highway Technician Superintendent II in Fayette County, you will have the opportunity to supervise a highway road unit in the maintenance and repair of roadways and special projects within an assigned highway district area.

Holders of the Highway Technician Superintendent II position will complete tasks such as:

  • Supervise and assist employees in maintenance and repair of roads, bridges, and landslide repairs.

  • Provide technical assistance and oversight on highway maintenance projects and inspect work for completion.

  • Coordinate and inspect road repairs and contract work.

  • Respond to and supervise snow and ice removal and other emergencies.

Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:

  • Responding to and supervise snow and ice removal and other emergencies.

  • Supervising, overseeing, and assisting highway employees in the maintenance and repair of roads, bridges, culverts, guardrails, roadside vegetation, etc.

  • Coordinating and inspecting contract work such as, but not limited to asphalt, guardrail, crack sealing, landslide repair, drainage repair, etc.

  • Maintaining records and reports on personnel, equipment, and supplies.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Experience interpreting department policies and procedures.

  • Experience with highway maintenance and repair of roads.

  • Experience completing shift or on-call schedules.

  • Experience in intermediate and heavy equipment operations for road maintenance.

Additional position information: Position requires working in inclement weather, driving along the highways to determine maintenance needs, lifting, bending, stooping, and standing.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have twelve years of construction or highway maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program will substitute for six (6) years of highway related experience in construction or maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Leadership Level 2 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather. Must be able to respond to emergencies 24/7.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
