By joining our Prestonsburg Section as a Highway Technician I in Floyd County, you'll have the opportunity to perform basic level work of highway, roadway, or roadside maintenance in Floyd and Martin Counties Holders of the Highway Technician I position will complete tasks such as: Perform technical tasks in support of engineering programs related to agency highway maintenance and construction. Serve as quality assurance inspector for multiple activities on construction and maintenance work such as laying pipe, earthwork, paving asphalt, and guardrail installation.

Read engineering plans and specifications for construction, maintenance and repair of highways and bridges. Operating dump trucks with snow plow and salt spreader to work in the winter months. Holders of this job title will obtain:

Working on rough terrain and in changing climates. Working with strict deadlines Learn to perform basic quality assurance, material sampling and testing such as concrete slump and temperature and asphalt content and density. Learn to perform daily inspection reports Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

Must have successfully completed the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1. Must possess and maintain a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement. Must have minimum 4 years of basic maintenance and/or construction experience.

Computer and Sitemanger experience. This position requires standing/stooping/bending/lifting 50 pounds and respond to emergencies. It requires the employee to work on State Highway with oncoming traffic to perform roadway repairs.

Must have four years of construction or highway maintenance experience. Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance.

Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year- for-year basis. Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:

NONE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 2 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification.

Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials. Working Conditions Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide.

Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather. Probationary Period This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
